Coming off a huge 4-2 victory over top-ranked Michigan, Northeastern lost to No. 15 Miami, 6-2, on Saturday night at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. The Huskies scored two goals in the third period, but came up short on the final day of the Lefty McFadden Invitational. Junior Mike Morris had a goal and an assist for the Huskies, who dropped to 1-1 on the season as Miami improved to 2-0.
Down 5-0, the Huskies got on the board with two goals within a span of 17 seconds in the third period. Jason Guerriero faked a shot that enticed Miami goalie Brandon Crawford-West, then passed to Morris, who easily beat Crawford-West for the score 5:35 into the third.
Just 17 seconds later, Morris fed Yale Lewis for a quick score that made it 5-2 at 5:52 in the third period. Miami's Andy Greene later scored an empty-netter with under a minute remaining to give the Miami a 6-2 final.
Though they came up short, the Huskies outshot Miami 41-22 in the game. Sophomore goalie Adam Geragosian made the second start of his career for the Huskies, making 16 saves and allowing five goals. Crawford-West played a spectacular game for the RedHawks, making 39 saves, including 16 in the first period and 14 in the second.
The Huskies' special teams play faltered as they allowed Miami to score three power-play goals in eight chances. On the flip side, the Huskies came up empty on 10 power-play chances.
Northeastern fell to a quick 2-0 deficit when the RedHawks scored a pair of power-play goals in the first period. Miami's Marty Guerin scored 7:48 into the game with assists from Chris Michael and Nathan Davis. The RedHawks' Geoff Smith made it 2-0 at 12:04 on a goal assisted by Mitch Ganzak.
The RedHawks converted on a 5-3 power-play advantage in the second period when Smith scored his second goal at 7:01. MU's Matt Christie added an even-handed goal to give the RedHawks a 4-0 edge heading into the final period. Greene scored 3:46 into the final frame to make it 5-0 before the Huskies got on the board.
Next up, the Huskies host the defending national champion Denver Pioneers in their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Matthews Arena.
