The Huskies scored first for the second night in a row but couldn't hold on as they lost to UMass Lowell, 2-1, on Friday night at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Captain Jason Guerriero scored NU's goal and Keni Gibson made 21 saves in net for the Huskies.

Northeastern falls to 7-11-2 overall and 3-6-1 in Hockey East while the River Hawks improve to 11-5-2 overall and 2-5-1 in Hockey East. UMass Lowell is 7-0-2 in its last nine games.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead when Guerriero scored at 12:44 into the second period. Steve Birnstill took the puck down the left side and passed it to Guerriero, who was right in front of the net and beat UMass Lowell goalie Peter Vetri. It was Guerriero's eighth goal and 24th point of the season. Entering the game, he was tied for the Hockey East lead in points.

It didn't take the River Hawks long to tie it as Ben Walter scored his Hockey East leading 17th goal of the season at 14:53. Walter took the puck on the left side, passed it to Danny O'Brien and O'Brien passed it right back to Walter, who netted the goal.

UMass Lowell took the lead when defenseman Cleve Kinley scored from the middle of the left circle at 16:36 in the second period. Andrew Martin and Jason Tejchma assisted on the play.

In the third period, UMass Lowell's Rene Gauthier took an interference penalty at 3:20 and Brian Bova was called for slashing at 9:14 but the Huskies couldn't score on the power-plays. The Huskies pulled Gibson from goal with just over a minute remaining but couldn't score.

The Huskies had some good scoring opportunities in the first period but couldn't find the net. In the seventh minute of the game, Bryan Esner made a fast break down the right side and came across and shot the puck in front but Vetri made the save. Minutes later, a nearly identical scenario unfolded, but Esner passed to Brian Swiniarski and Swiniarski couldn't get the shot off. Morris got a nice shot off in front of the net with 15 seconds left in the first but Vetri made a great save to keep it scoreless through one period.

The Huskies were solid defensively in the first, keeping UML off the scoreboard. Defenseman Jonathan Koop was called for obstruction-interference at 16:36 and the Huskies successfully killed the penalty. Gibson made a great save four minutes into the game when UMass Lowell captain Andrew Martin had a breakaway and shot from the right side of the crease.

The Huskies out-shot the River Hawks 29-23. NU was called for a season-low one penalty while UML was whistled for just three. Neither team scored on their power-play opportunities.

The Huskies are back in action next weekend when they play Providence Collee in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday. NU travels to PC on Friday night and hosts the Friars on Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
