Mike Morris had Northeastern's first two goals and Jason Guerriero assisted on both, then scored one of his own as Northeastern tied Providence, 3-3, on Friday night at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Huskies and Friars alternated six scores of the game. Goalie Keni Gibson made 31 saves on the night.
Huskies are now 7-11-3 and 3-6-2 in Hockey East while Providence 6-12-3 and 2-8-3 in league play.
Guerriero took advantage of a 5-on-3 power-play late in the second period to put the Huskies ahead, 3-2. With two Friars in the penalty box, the Huskies were peppering PC goalie Tyler Sims with shots to no avail. Guerriero, at the top of the left circle, finally potted the goal with a precise shot over Sims' right shoulder to put the Huskies ahead at 15:03 in the third. Guerriero got the rebound of a Josh Robertson shot that Sims saved moments earlier.
The Friars came back with a goal to tie it at 3-3 less than three minutes later. PC's Tony Zancanaro and Bill McCreary broke out a 2-on-1 with just Chuck Tomes back for the Huskies. Zancanaro took the puck down the right side, then passed across to McCreary on the right and McCreary netted the goal at 17:58.
Both teams converted on their first power-plays to start off the game. Providence's Matt Mannina was called for hooking, giving NU the first advantage of the contest. Morris responded with a goal from the left circle at 2:40. Guerriero got the puck from Steve Birnstill and passed it to Morris from way behind the net to set up the score.
Husky defenseman Brian Deeth made a trip to the penalty box 4:09 into the first period when he was called for obstruction-holding. The Friars responded by tying the game at 1-0 on a Nate Meyers score at 5:09. Meyers redirected a Colin McDonald shot from the left side of the crease behind Gibson.
The Huskies took a 2-1 lead just after the start of the second period. Guerriero took a shot from the boards on the left side that Sims saved. Jared Mudryk got the puck in front of the net and kicked it over to Morris, who slid the puck behind Sims for his second goal of the game 37 seconds into the second period.
Providence came right back to tie the game at 2-2 at 6:13 in the second. Jamie Carroll took a cross-ice pass from Chris Chaput and put the puck behind Gibson's stick-side.
With the score tied 3-3, Providence came out with its guns blazing in the third period. The Friars outshot NU 9-3 to start the period off but couldn't get anything on the board. The Husky attack began a few minutes in, as NU took over and blasted 14-straight shots on goal without allowing another Friar shot for the remainder of the third. NU couldn't get anything past PC's Sims. The teams went scoreless in overtime to make the 3-3 final.
NU hosts Providence on Saturday night at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m.
