The Huskies and Black Bears went scoreless for 54:37 before Maine's Mike Lundin scored 14:37 in the third period to put Maine ahead, 1-0, before a crowd of 5,491 at Alfond Arena in Orono. Husky goalie Keni Gibson made 25 saves.
"The guys came ready to play and competed, but we just didn't generate enough offense until the final couple of minutes," said Northeastern head coach Bruce Crowder. "We were looking for the perfect shot, with guys holding onto it instead of putting it on net."
Northeastern falls to 9-13-3 on the season and 5-8-2 in Hockey East while Maine pulled forward to Maine 14-8-5 and 9-3-3.
Northeastern and Maine skated to a scoreless tie after two periods. It was the first time this season that NU played through two scoreless periods. NU was out-shot 11-7 in the first and 8-1 in the second. Gibson made 19 saves through two periods while Maine backstop Jimmy Howard made eight stops after two. Howard ended the game with 15 saves.
Maine finally scored when Mathew Deschamps took the rebound of a Ben Murphy shot and got it to Lundin, who netted the only goal of the game 14:37 into the third period.
Husky defenseman Tim Judy made a couple of plays that were essential in preventing Black Bear goals. With seconds remaining on a Jon Awe penalty in the first period, Maine threw a barrage of shots at Gibson. Gibson set up on his stick-side to save a Troy Barnes shot that went wide, but then was out of position on his left and Judy came into the crease and made a save on a Derek Damon shot just under nine minutes into the first.
On a Northeastern power-play in the second period, Maine's Michel Leveille broke out and Judy came up from behind and took him down to save the shot. He was called for tripping on the play but the Huskies stuffed the penalty. Yale Lewis and Aaron Moore made similar plays in the third period.
At 17:00 in the second period, Maine got a huge scoring opportunity when Josh Soares found himself with the puck all alone in front of Gibson. The play was called off before he got a shot off, however, as Maine was called off-sides.
The scoreless first period was NU's third of the season. Jared Mudyrk had NU's best scoring opportunity of the first period when he took a slap-shot from the left circle that rang off the left post and bounced out of the crease.
The Huskies and Black Bears face-off for their final meeting of the regular season on Saturday at Alfond Arena at 7 p.m.
