The Huskies came back from a two-goal deficit and tied Maine, 2-2, with goals from Mike Morris and Bryan Esner that were both assisted by Tim Judy at Alfond Arena on Saturday night. The outcome of the game was in question until the final seconds as Northeastern had a power-play for most of the overtime period. It was NU's first tie at Alfond Arena since Dec. 3, 2000. Keni Gibson made 32 saves while Maine's Jimmy Howard made 25.
NU's fourth come-back tie of the season puts the Huskies' record at 9-14-4 and 5-8-3 in Hockey East while Maine now checks in at 14-8-6 and 9-3-4. The Huskies split the season-series with the Black Bears for the first time since 2001-02.
Maine's Michel Leveille was called for a five-minute major for spearing Jared Mudryk 24 seconds into overtime and Mudryk was called for obstruction-interference less than a minute later to make it 4-on-4 play. Neither team could find the net in the extra frame, however, and each left the arena with a Hockey East point.
Esner notched his fourth goal of the season when he beat Maine goalie Jimmy Howard on a breakaway at 9:43 in the third period. Judy chipped a long pass up to Esner to set up the score that tied the game at 2-2.
Down 2-0 after the first period, the Huskies came out with the only power-play goal in a second period in which 16 penalties were called for 32 minutes -- nine on Maine and seven on Northeastern. Morris scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season with assists from Judy and Jason Guerriero at 18:41 to get the Huskies within a goal heading into the final set. Mudryk had several good shots in the period, including one from center ice that went off the post.
A scuffle midway through the second period resulted in penalties for both teams with Maine taking a 5-on-4 advantage at 8:39. Maine's Greg Moore was called for interference less than a minute later but no goals resulted from any of the power-plays. Jon Awe took an obstruction-interference penalty at 12:07 but the Huskies killed the penalty. The period was capped when Esner and Maine's Brent Shepheard were called for matching roughing penalties at 19:59.
Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Black Bears got on the board when Keith Johnson scored a power-play goal 7:28 into the first. Johnson got the puck all alone in front of the crease and beat Gibson with a top-shelf shot. Maine took a 2-0 lead on a John Ronan goal 16:26 into the game. Ronan was exiting the penalty box and got a pass from Mathew Deschamps, turned it into a breakaway and beat Gibson with a high shot from the right side.
The Huskies' shooting troubles from Friday night lagged into the first period as NU was out-shot 11-5. The Huskies turned it around as the game went on, however, out-shooting Maine 15-12 in the second.
The Huskies take on Massachusetts on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena. That will be NU's final Hockey East game before facing Harvard in the first round of the Beanpot at the FleetCenter on Feb. 7 at 5 p.m.
