Mike Morris scored the game-winning goal on a short-hander as the Huskies topped Massachusetts, 2-1, on Thursday night at Matthews Arena. Morris also assisted on Jason Guerriero's goal and goalie Keni Gibson made 28 saves.
The Huskies improved to 10-13-4 overall and 6-8-3 in Hockey East, moving past UMass Lowell for fifth-place in the league standings. The win also put more breathing room between NU and Massachusetts, as the Minutemen remain in seventh place behind UMass Lowell. The Minutemen are now 10-16-2 overall and 4-11-2 in Hockey East.
With Massachusetts on a 5-on-4 power-play, Tim Judy chipped the puck ahead into the UMass zone. Guerriero grabbed the puck and passed it to Morris at center-ice and Morris redirected it past UMass goalie Gabe Winer at 19:28 in the second period. It was Morris' 13th score of the season.
After UMass scored the first goal of the game, Guerriero evened the score on the Huskies' first power-play of the game. Morris and Jared Mudryk got assists on the play. It was Guerriero's 12th goal of the season at 5:17 in the second.
Massachusetts had taken the lead just over a minute earlier when sophomore Kevin Jarmen scored off a pass from junior Stephen Werner. Jarmen banked the puck off a Husky player and it got past Gibson 4:03 into the second.
The game started slow with NU having the only good scoring chance in the first period. Steve Sanders had a clear breakaway chance to put the Huskies on the board with a little over five minutes remaining in the first but couldn't get the puck past Winer.
Late in the third period, the Minutemen brought on the offensive. NU's Gibson silenced it by making a huge save on a UMass 3-on-1 followed by a clutch two on one save to keep the Husky's ahead by one.
UMass' Winer made 20 stops for the Minutemen. NU went 1-2 on the power while the Minutemen were 0-2. UMass out-shot the Huskies, 29-22.
The win gives the Huskies much needed momentum as they head into their first round Beanpot matchup against 10th-ranked Harvard at the FleetCenter on Monday at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will play Boston College or Boston University in the final on Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. Both first round games, as well as the championship game, will be televised live on NESN. Both Northeastern games will be carried live on Huskies Radio, WJIB 740 AM.
