Senior Tim Judy scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to lead Northeastern to a 2-1 victory over Harvard in the first round of the Beanpot Tournament at the FleetCenter on Monday night. Judy grabbed a rebound and fired a top-shelf shot past Harvard goalie Dov Grumet-Morris at 2:01 in the second overtime to advance Northeastern to the final for the first time since Judy's freshman year of 2002.

"The puck came out in front, pretty close to the blueline. I just dragged it out in front and shot it." said Judy."I didn't even see it go in and then I saw the red light. That's probably the biggest goal of my career. On this stage and in this environment it's unbelievable."

Northeastern will play Boston University in the final, as the Terriers topped Boston College, 3-1, in the second game on Monday.

The Huskies held Harvard scoreless in three power-plays that spanned 5:26 of the first overtime, allowing just three shots on goal when the Crimson had a man-advantage. Northeastern goalie Keni Gibson made 11 saves in the first overtime and 39 saves in the game to help Northeastern improve to 11-13-4 on the season. Harvard fell to 14-6-2 with the loss.

Harvard took a quick lead in the first period, but the Huskies tied it at 1-1 before the first was over. Jason Guerriero won a faceoff in the left circle, passed the puck back to Morris, who fired it past Grumet-Morris at 17:23. It was Morris' 14th goal of the season, and the 11th one he scored with an assist from Guerriero.

Harvard took the lead shortly after the puck dropped when Crimson center Kevin Du got the puck from Ryan Maki, made it through the Husky defense and fired a shot past Husky goalie Keni Gibson 59 seconds into the game.

"We've been in that spot before," said Gibson of the early goal. "We battled back and after you do it a few times, you don't really let it get to you. It's only a one goal lead early, and at least there's 59 more minutes to play. "

The first overtime period was hard-fought by the Huskies, as Donny Grover was in the penalty box for the first 1:26 and Steve Birnstill and Guerriero were each called for two-minute minors.

With Grover in the penalty box, there were several scoring opportunities for each team. The Huskies dodged a bullet just seconds into OT when Harvard's Noah Welch shot a puck from near the blueline that whistled just wide of the post. The Huskies countered when Guerriero and Jared Mudryk broke out in a 2-on-1 into the Harvard zone. Guerriero's short-handed shot was deflected over the goal by Grumet Morris.

Birnstill was called for hooking 8:44 into overtime, creating a golden opportunity for the Crimson. The Huskies' adept penalty-kill unit didn't allow a single shot on goal during the power-play. Guerriero was called for interference 13:43 into the extra set for another Harvard power-play. Husky special teams once again snuffed the Crimson opportunity. Just as Guerriero was exiting the penalty box, NU's Yale Lewis took a great shot in front of the net that Grumet-Morris deflected high. Minutes later, Morris took a shot from the right side that went just wide. The Huskies finally got a power-play opportunity 17:13 into overtime when Harvard's Welch was called for hooking, but couldn't net the game-winner.

The Huskies got a chance to take the lead late in the third period when Harvard's Jon Pelle was called for tripping at 15:51. The Huskies got two shots on goal in the power-play but couldn't get anything past Grumet-Morris.

With just over a minute left in regulation, Chuck Tomes broke into the Harvard zone and got a shot off but it was blocked by a Crimson defenseman. Harvard's Du got a solid shot off from the right circle with 44 seconds left but Gibson came up with the save. Grover was called for holding at 19:26 in the third but the Huskies held off the Harvard offense to force overtime.

"If you're not going to get excited about a win like that, I guess you shouldn't be in this business," said NU head coach Bruce Crowder. "It's very special because these guys have been through a lot and they've persevered."

The last time Northeastern went into overtime in the Beanpot was against Harvard in the 1999 semis. NU prevailed, 4-3, on a goal by Brian Cummings at 4:35 in OT. It was the first Beanpot double-overtime since 1994 when Boston College beat NU, 5-4, in the semifinals. The Beanpot's only triple overtime game came when Boston University beat Northeastern, 5-4, in the third extra period in 1965.

The Huskies take on UMass Lowell on Thursday night at Tsongas Arena before returning to the FleetCenter next Monday to face Boston University in the Beanpot final.
