The Huskies held on for a 3-2 victory over UMass Lowell on Thursday at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. The Huskies got a goal and an assist from Steve Sanders and also got goals from Jason Guerriero and Tim Judy.Goalie Keni Gibson made 29 saves.

Northeastern improves to 12-13-4 and 7-8-3 in Hockey East, moving into a tie for fifth-place in the league with UML. UMass Lowell falls to 16-7-4 and 7-7-4 in Hockey East.

Guerriero got the Huskies on the board 13:07 into the game. He faked a pass from the left circle to Sanders, who was in front of the crease, and then shot the puck past River Hawk goalie Peter Vetri. Sanders and Jared Mudryk got assists on the play.

The Huskies made it 2-0 when Sanders took a pass from Chuck Tomes and netted the goal at 8:02 in the second period. It was Sanders' second goal of the season and the eighth of his career.

A pair of UMass Lowell penalties gave the Huskies a 5-on-3 power-play at 17:40 in the second period. The Huskies got what they were looking for at 18:10 when Judy blasted the puck from the point into the top of the net to give the Huskies a 3-0 cushion. Steve Birnstill passed Judy the puck for the score. It was Judy's second goal in two games after he scored the game-winning goal in double overtime against Harvard on Monday to get Northeastern to the Beanpot final.

With Chuck Tomes in the penalty box, the River Hawks got a power-play goal from Ben Walter to cut Northeastern's lead to 3-1. UML's Danny O'Brien passed the puck out of the corner to Walter, who was all alone in front and scored.

The Huskies got a barrage of shots from Bryan Esner, Jimmy Russo and Brian Swiniarski in the 11th minute of the third period, but Vetri was a rock and didn't let anything by. Ray Ortiz was called for hooking a minute later, but the Huskies killed the penalty and kept the pressure on.

UMass Lowell pulled its goalie with 1:40 to go and it paid off as the River Hawks got a goal from Jeremy Hall at 18:22. That got the River Hawks within a goal but the Huskies held on for the win.

The Huskies take on Boston University in quest of their first Beanpot title since 1988 on Monday at the Fleet Center. The game begins at 8 p.m. and will be televised live on NESN and carried on Huskies Radio, WJIB 740 AM.
