The Huskies dropped a 4-2 decision to defending national champ Denver despite 33 saves from netminder Keni Gibson on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. The game was tied at 2-2 in the second period before Denver came up with a second-period goal and one more in the third.
Four of the five goals in the game came on power-plays. The Huskies drop to 1-2 on the season while Denver notched its first win to improve to 1-2.
"I was disappointed with the effort and the play of some of our guys," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. "We looked like a team that played last night."
The teams played evenly throughout most of the first period before DU's Geoff Paukovich notched a power-play goal at 18:20. He got assists from Luke Fulghum and Adria Veiderman. The Huskies dodged a bullet when Fulghum wristed one over Gibson, but the puck hit the crossbar and the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Huskies came out with a power-play goal of their own 2:48 into the second period. Mike Morris took a feed from Jason Guerriero in front of the goal and lifted one over the glove Denver netminder Glenn Fisher.
The Pioneers took the lead back minutes later when Jon Foster slid the puck behind Gibson from the right side on a power-play at 6:33.
But the Huskies weren't done as they tied it up once again on a Bryan Esner power-play goal at 13:00 in the second. Esner got assists from Brian Deeth and Jon Awe.
Denver got the game-winner at 16:11 on the only even-handed goal of the game. Kevin Ulanski intercepted a Guerriero pass right in front of the net and beat Gibson to make it 3-2. The Pioneers made the final 4-2 on a Matt Carle power-play goal 16:19 in the third.
Denver was 3-of-14 in power-play opportunities while the Huskies went 2-5. NU was penalized 11 times for 22 minutes while the Pioneers got just six penalties for 12 minutes.
The Huskies look for a win against Rensselaer at Matthews Arena on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
