| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Boston University 3, Northeastern 2 (OT) - Beanpot final
Jared Mudryk's goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation and Keni Gibson's Eberly Award-winning play in goal got the Huskies to overtime against 11th-ranked Boston University, but Terrier freshman Chris Bourque netted the most important goal, the game-winner 14:10 into overtime to lift BU to a 3-2 win in the Beanpot final at the FleetCenter on Monday night. The Huskies came back from a 2-0 deficit on goals by Jon Awe and Mudryk to come the closest to the Beanpot title since they last won it in 1988. "It was an exciting game," said Crowder. "Any time you get into overtime anything can happen. Last week we were on the good side of it and this week we're not. My biggest statement is just how proud I am of the way these guys played and how they have represented this university over the past two Monday nights. I don't think anyone could have asked for more." With the Huskies down with under three minutes left in regulation, Mudryk won a faceoff in the right circle, got the puck back to Tim Judy, who fired a shot that BU netminder John Curry saved. Mudryk followed the puck up to the crease and knocked it past a sprawling Curry at 17:55 in the third period to tie the game, 2-2. "You get to the point in the game where you're down and you have to throw the kitchen sink at them and I think that's what we did," said Crowder. "We had plenty of opportunities even after we tied it, 2-2." After Gibson had just made two saves, Bourque sent the puck into the right side of the net just out of the reach of the sprawling goalie. Northeastern fell to 12-14-4 overall with the loss while Boston University improved to 17-10-2 overall. Gibson became NU's seventh Eberly Award winner, and the first since Marc Robitaille won the award back-to-back in 1997-98. He made 26 saves against BU and 39 in the first round against Harvard. Gibson saved the game for the Huskies 4:52 into overtime when BU had a 3-on-2 and BU's Brad Zancanaro took a point-blank, wide-open shot from the left side that Gibson saved. After going scoreless for the first period and a half, the Husky offense came alive in the second half of the second period when Awe fired a rocket shot over Curry's left shoulder to cut BU's lead to 2-1 at 12:38. Awe took a cross-ice pass from Mike Morris at the right point and fired the shot past Curry. A nearly identical situation unfolded minutes later when fired a shot from the right circle but Curry knocked it away. The Huskies got a 5-on-3 at 16:30 in the second period that lasted 53 seconds when Brian McConnell was called for cross-checking with Brad Zancanaro in the box for roughing. The Huskies got several nice shots off but were stifled by Curry and couldn't find the net and BU took a 2-1 lead out of the second period. Yale Lewis had an unbelievable scoring opportunity with the Huskies on a power-play at 13:20 in the third period. Mike Morris passed the puck ahead to Lewis, who was all alone, but he was called off-sides before taking a shot. The Huskies had several other good chances but couldn't get anything into the net. The Huskies tied up the BU offense in the third period as the Terriers had only one good scoring chance. Five minutes into the third, BU had three good shots with Gibson sprawling, but the netminder stopped them and the Huskies' defenseman cleared the puck away. BU took a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal by Bryan Miller at 6:45 in the first. Miller stole the puck in the Husky zone and broke toward the net. Donny Grover gave chase but couldn't stop the shot and Miller got it past Gibson. That was BU's second breakaway of the period, as Gibson made a great save on a Bourque shot just over a minute into the game. Boston University took a 2-0 lead on a Brian McConnell power-play goal 16:02 into the game. Kevin Schaffer shot the puck from the blueline and McConnell deflected it past Gibson from the top of the crease. Curry made a great save in the sixth minute to save a Husky goal. Tim Judy made a perfect pass to Jason Guerriero on the right side of the crease and Guerriero redirected it but Curry grabbed it to keep the game scoreless. The Huskies got a great scoring opportunity a couple minutes into the game when Bryan Esner took a pass from Jimmy Russo and nearly netted the goal on the left side of the crease but the puck hit the side of the net. The Huskies took several great shots during a power-play from 10:09-12:09 but couldn't penetrate the Terrier defense. The Huskies look to move up in the Hockey East standings this weekend as they host Merrimack on Friday and New Hampshire on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
