| 2004-05 Schedule/Results New Hampshire 5, Northeastern 2
Eighth-ranked New Hampshire took a 3-0 lead out of the first period and never looked back as it beat Northeastern 5-2 on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Jimmy Russo scored his second goal in as many games and Ray Ortiz notched his first goal since NU last played New Hampshire Nov. 20. The Huskies out-shot the Wildcats 41-28 but were unable to get more than two goals past UNH netminder Kevin Regan. Husky stopper Keni Gibson made 23 saves. Northeastern falls to 13-15-4 overall and 8-9-3 in league play after hitting the .500 mark in Hockey East for the first time since Nov. 27. Hockey East leading New Hampshire improved to 22-7-3 overall and 15-3-2 in the league. With New Hampshire up 3-0, Russo took a shot on Regan, then hit in his own rebound at 8:26 in the second to cut UNH's lead to 3-1. He took a feed from Jason Guerriero on the play. The Huskies couldn't stay there for long, however, as Preston Callander got the puck from Sean Collins and made it 4-1 at 9:56 in the second. NU fought back in the third to get within two when Ortiz scored a power-play goal at 7:24. He tipped in a hard Donny Grover shot. With the minutes winding down, Husky head coach pulled Gibson. The Huskies' couldn't do anything, however, and UNH's Jacob Micflikier ended NU's hopes when he darted down the left side and scored an empty-netter to make it 5-1 at 19:08 in the third period. With the game scoreless, UNH notched a pair of goals a minute apart as Brett Hemingway and Daniel Winnik found the back of the net at 11:10 and 12:01, respectively. With under a minute remaining in the first period, senior Sean Collins scored to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. A minute into the game, NU took a tough bounce on a chance to get an early lead when Donny Grover fired a rocket that Regan was nowhere near. The shot went off the left post, behind Regan and out of the crease. UNH defenders cleared the puck away. Tim Judy got the second assist on Russo's goal, extending his career-best point streak to seven games. The Huskies were penalized way over their nation-least average of 13.2 minutes per game, as they racked up 10 whistles for 20 minutes. Northeastern looks to right the ship with a pair of games against cross-town rival Boston University next week. The Huskies host BU at Matthews Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then play their first game in BU's Agganis Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Huskies will be looking for redemption on the team that ebat them in the Beanpot final Feb. 14.
