| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Boston University 1
Northeastern got its first win over Boston University this season over in its first trip to BU's Agganis Arena behind a pair of Mike Morris goals on Saturday night. Morris scored the first goal of the game in the second period and after BU came back to tie it he netted his second score of the evening. Husky goalie Keni Gibson was stellar in net, making 27 saves on 28 shots. It was the 10th time this season that Gibson allowed a goal or less. Northeastern improves to 14-15-5 overall and breaks even at 9-9-4 in Hockey East with two regular season games to go. No. 9 Boston University falls to 20-11-3 overall and 14-5-3 in the league with the loss. The Huskies and Terriers were both assured playoff berths before the game began, but the Huskies had the opportunity to spoil BU's chances to win the Hockey East regular season title. BC beat UNH on Saturday, pushing BU down to third in the Hockey East standings. The Huskies sit in sixth and there is a good chance Northeastern will play BU in the first round of the Hockey East playoffs. The first half of the game went scoreless until Morris potted his 16th goal of the season on a power-play to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. With the Huskies on a 5-on-4 advantage, Morris took a pass from Judy at the point and shot it past BU netminder John Curry at 10:05 in the second period. BU got a power-play opportunity late in the second when Chuck Tomes was called for tripping. BU had several good chances but couldn't penetrate the Husky defense. The Huskies had a great short-handed shot when Tim Judy and Jared Mudryk broke toward the BU goal. Judy passed the puck over to Mudryk, but Curry was able to stop Mudryk's shot. Moments later BU took the puck into the Husky zone and BU's Kenny Roche took a point-blank shot and Gibson made an acrobatic save to keep it out of the net. NU outshot BU, 12-9, in the period. Boston University knotted the score at 1-1 3:36 into the third period. Brad Van der Gulik took the puck down the left side, then passed it over to Brad Zancanaro, who tipped it up and past Gibson. Penalties were called on BU and NU shortly after, creating a 4-on-4 situation. The Huskies didn't waste any time with it 4-on-4 as Jason Guerriero got the puck, took it behind the net, then made a beautiful back-handed pass to Morris on the right side and Morris put it behind Curry on his glove-side to get the lead back for the Huskies at 5:23. At 10:30 in the third, BU had a sure equalizer when Jekabs Redlihs took a shot on the open right side of the net but the puck went off the post and behind the net. The Terriers had several opportunities to tie it in the final minutes of the game but couldn't get anything past Gibson and the Husky defense. "I think [Gibson] is the all-league goalie right now," said Boston University head coach Jack Parker. "Some guys are better than him in some areas but he's the best overall goalie right now...he's been a very good goalie for a long time...I'd say he's done more for his team than any other goalie in the league." The Huskies and Terriers went scoreless in the first period. NU outshot BU, 9-7, in the period, but the Terriers had several scoring chances that they could not capitalize on. Gibson was solid in net, making key glove saves while both teams went scoreless on power-play opportunities in the first, as BU's Brad Zancanaro was called for tripping at 7:52 and NU's Yale Lewis was whistled for holding at 12:45. It was the fourth scoreless first period in NU's last nine games. Northeastern lost to BU twice in the teams' first two meetings this season, including an overtime loss in the Beanpot final. The Huskies and Terriers tied at Matthews Arena on Wednesday and with the Husky win, they split the Hockey East series at 1-1-1. The Huskies finish the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series with Massachusetts. The Huskies travel to the Mullins Center in Amherst to face off with the Minutemen on Friday night, then UMass comes to Matthews Arena for the final game of the season on Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
