| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Massachusetts 2, Northeastern 1
In just his second start of the season and the third of his career, Husky goalie Adam Geragosian held Massachusetts to two goals and made 38 saves but the Minuteman defense tied up the Huskies and UMass prevailed, 2-1, at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Jason Guerriero scored a goal at the buzzer to get Northeastern on the board. Geragosian held UMass scoreless for two periods until Kevin Jarman scored UMass' goal early in the third period. Northeastern falls to 14-16-5 and 9-10-4 in Hockey East. The loss means that Northeastern will be the sixth seed in the Hockey East playoffs and meet the No. 3 seed in the first round of the tournament. Massachusetts improves to 13-20-2 and 6-15-2 in the league and will be fighting for the seventh seed in the playoffs on Saturday. Northeastern had beaten UMass three times in a row prior to the evening's action. "I give credit to UMass," said Northeastern head coach Bruce Crowder. "They took it to us in the first period. We looked like our skates were in quicksand, we just didn't answer the bell. It's tough to get that back as the game goes on." With Geragosian pulled from the net and a player from each team in the penalty box, Northeastern had a 5-on-4 advantage for the final two minutes of the game. As time expired, Guerriero got a pass from Tim Judy in front of the net and shot it through traffic to make it 2-1. Geragosian held UMass scoreless until Jarman hit in the rebound of a James Solon shot to break the scoreless tie and make it 1-0 in favor of UMass at 1:39 in the third period. Geragosian made three great saves on three hard P.J. Fenton shots on a power-play in the sixth minute of the third period to keep the Huskies in reach. UMass scored an insurance goal at 12:44 in the third when Stephen Werner scored on the rebound of a Zech Klann shot to make it 2-0. Geragosian made 10 saves in the first and 14 each in the second and third. "He was great," said Crowder of Geragosian, who was making his first start since Oct. 8 and his second appearance of the season. "[The loss] wasn't Adam Geragosian's problem. He played very well and came ready to play tonight." After a night of rest, regular goalie Keni Gibson, who leads the nation in minutes, will be back in action on Saturday night against UMass for his final game at Matthews Arena. UMass controlled the puck for most of the first period, taking eight shots before Husky defenseman Jon Awe got the first NU shot off, a hard shot that UMass goalie Gabe Winer saved 11:58 into the game. The Husky offense came alive from there on, out-shooting the Minutemen, 6-2, but couldn't get on the board before the period expired. The Huskies appeared to score on a power-play 11:05 into the second period when Jimmy Russo made a great pass to the top of the crease and Guerriero redirected it past Winer. The goal was called off, however, as the officials ruled that Guerriero kicked it into the net. Judy was called for obstruction-interference at 13:43 in the second period. Moments after the UMass power-play began, Ray Ortiz got the puck to Guerriero, who got a great shot off but Winer made the save. Brian Swiniarski got another solid shot off just after before UMass finally got a scoring opportunity. UMass' Marvin Degon got the puck through the Husky defense and was all alone in front of Geragosian, but he didn't get a shot off. Geragosian made his first start of the season Oct. 9 when the Huskies lost to Miami, 6-2, in the second game of the season. He relieved backstop Keni Gibson on Jan. 21 against Boston College and made 12 saves on 13 shots. The Huskies will look for redemption as they host the Minutemen on Saturday for Senior Night at Matthews Arena. It will be the final game at Matthews Arena for Awe, Gibson, Donny Grover, Guerriero, Jonathan Koop, Judy, Jared Mudryk and Jaron Herriman, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Boston College beat Maine, 4-3, at Conte Forum on Friday night, assuring that the Black Bears can only finish third or fourth in Hockey East. BC pulls into a tie for first in the league with New Hampshire and can clinch the regular season title with a win over the Black Bears on Saturday. New Hampshire hosts Boston University at the Wittemore Center on Saturday. Northeastern's most likely opponents in the first round of the Hockey East Tournament are Maine or Boston University.
