| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Northeastern 8, Massachusetts 3
The Huskies went off for four goals in the third period and Jason Guerriero wrapped up the Hockey East scoring title as Northeastern beat UMass, 8-3, on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Guerriero scored two goals and had three assists to bring his season total to 11 goals and 23 assists for 34 points in Hockey East games. He is Northeastern's first Hockey East scoring champion ever. Despite Guerriero's great effort, he wasn't even Northeastern's high scorer, as Mike Morris went off for two goals and four assists. Northeastern is the No. 6 seed in the Hockey East Tournament and will play No. 3 New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in a best-of-three series. "It really didn't matter [who we play]" said Northeastern head coach Bruce Crowder. "Wherever we go we're going to have to play hard and we're going to have to be ready." The Huskies finish the regular season with a 15-16-5 overall record and an even 10-10-4 Hockey East record. Massachusetts finishes with a 13-21-2 overall mark and a 6-16-2 Hockey East record and will play Boston College in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Guerriero passed Patrick Eaves of Boston College to win the scoring title. Eaves had 30 points entering tonight's game, while Guerriero was tied for second with 29. But Guerriero went off for five points against Massachusetts, while Eaves went scoreless. Guerriero finishes the regular season with 17 goals and 31 assists for 48 points overall, the highest total for a Northeastern player since 1989-90 when Harry Mews notched 59 total points. "I got good plays, a lot of pucks went our way," said Guerriero. "I guess you could say it was lucky," added the humble captain. "It was good to see four seniors get goals on senior night." Unlike last night's game, which was a defensive battle, the Huskies opened up tonight's contest with two goals in under seven minutes. Guerriero scored the first of the night when Jimmy Russo made a beautiful pass from behind the net to Guerriero in front and Guerriero wristed the puck past UMass goalie Gabe Winer getting the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 3:07 in the first period. The Huskies went up 2-0 when senior Jared Mudryk notched his 10th goal of the season at 6:45 on a feed from Yale Lewis. UMass didn't roll over, however, as Jeff Lang made it 2-1 with a power-play goal at 11:02 in the first. The Huskies got a two-goal lead back before the first period was over when senior Tim Judy notched a power-play goal at 19:01. He got assists from Morris and Guerriero. Morris scored his first goal of the night to kick off the second period when Russo made an identical pass from behind the net and Morris finished it at 1:14 in the second period. The momentum of the game changed at that point, however, as UMass got power-play scores from Stephen Werner and Marvin Degon at 6:24 and 11:22, respectively. That made it 4-3 in favor of Northeastern heading into the final period. The third period was all Northeastern as Guerriero, Russo, Morris and senior Jon Awe all scored, while goalie Keni Gibson shut out the Minutemen in the period. Guerriero kicked it off at 7:49 with his 17th overall goal of the season from Russo and Morris. After three fine assists, Russo notched a goal of his own at 10:59 on a feed from Guerriero. Morris scored his second goal of the night at 12:14 in the third period. When it looked like the scoring was over, Awe notched a goal at 19:50 with assists from seniors Jonathan Koop and Gibson. Gibson, a goalie, has three career assists. It was the first career assist. The defenseman scored one goal last season, giving him a career line of 1-1-2. The eight-goal game was Northeastern's best offensive outburst of the season. The Huskies' previous high goal total was six when they beat Providence, 6-0, on Jan. 15 at Matthews Arena. The Huskies get four days rest before taking on New Hampshire, a scoring juggernaut, on Thursday. Before Saturday's games, the Wildcats were averaging over four goals per game. Northeastern looks for its luck to change against New Hampshire, as the Huskies fell in three meetings this season. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
