Northeastern's Steve Sanders scored the first goal of the game to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead after the first period but New Hampshire scored four unanswered goals in the second period and added another two in the third to beat the Huskies, 6-1, at UNH's Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. on Thursday night. Northeastern goalie Keni Gibson made 34 saves on 39 shots before being relieved in the third period by backup Adam Geragosian.

Northeastern will have to beat New Hampshire on both Friday and Saturday in Durham to win the best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinal series. Northeastern falls to 15-17-5 on the season while New Hampshire improves to 23-9-5.

The Huskies got on the board first when Bryan Esner made a pass from behind the net to Sanders and Sanders lifted the puck over UNH goalie Kevin Regan's glove to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 5:34 in the first period. It was Sanders' third goal of the season and Jason Blain also got an assist on the play.

The Huskies had recovered from a New Hampshire offensive right after the first puck dropped, as the Wildcats got five shots on Gibson in the first two minutes. NU's Jared Mudryk was called for obstruction-holding the stick at 7:42 and the Huskies killed the penalty with great puck-clearing and a few key saves by Gibson. Gibson had 10 saves before the 10-minute mark and 15 in the first period.

Northeastern had a great scoring chance in the 16th minute of the first period when Aaron Moore took the puck down the left side and made a perfect pass to Mudryk. Mudryk got the shot off at the crease but Regan made a save to keep it 1-0 in favor of the Huskies.

New Hampshire evened the game on a power-play goal by Preston Callander 3:51 into the second period. Callander redirected a Sean Collins shot past Gibson to make it 1-1.

He couldn't hold off the Wildcats in their second power-play of the period, however, as New Hampshire got a goal from Brett Hemingway at 9:43 with Donny Grover in the penalty box. Hemingway hit in the rebound of a Brian Yandle shot from the left circle to get the Wildcats the lead.

Fifty seconds after Grover exited the penalty box he was back in, this time for boarding. The Huskies averted that penalty but less than 30 seconds later Brian Deeth was in the penalty box for slashing. The Huskies called a time-out to organize their penalty-kill but couldn't stop the Wildcat offense. Yandle gave New Hampshire a 3-0 lead at 13:59 in the second period with a power-play goal.

New Hampshire got its fourth goal of the second period on its only even score of the frame. Hemingway took a feed from Robbie Barker at 18:10 in the second to give New Hampshire a 4-1 lead. The Huskies got their first power-play of the period when Josh Ciocco was called for obstruction-holding at 19:37. The penalty stretched into the final period but the Huskies couldn't produce a goal.

The Huskies appeared to cut New Hampshire's lead to two goals in the ninth minute of the third period when a Joe Santilli shot got by Regan. Officials called high sticking on Yale Lewis, however, and the goal was discounted. New Hampshire extended its lead less than a minute later when Sean Collins scored at 9:28. Gibson was subsequently relieved by backup goalie Adam Geragosian. Geragosian gave up UNH's sixth goal at 13:03 in the third period on a Jacob Micflikier breakaway.

The Huskies take on New Hampshire in the second game of the three-game series on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Whittemore Center.
