The Huskies came from three goals down to get within one of tying it with under four minutes to go, but fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 7-4, on Tuesday night in Matthews Arena. Junior forward Mike Morris scored a pair of goals for the Huskies.
"Where we're going is the important thing," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. "Our October schedule is hard and it's not getting any easier, so we're working to get ready for Hockey East."
The Huskies dropped to 1-3-0 on the season while RPI improved to 2-1-1. RPI coach Dan Fridgen paid the Huskies respect following the game.
"I thought we let them off the hook and they kept coming at us," said Fridgen. "They're a good team and they played tough."
The Huskies fought to tie it at 2-2 in the second period before RPI scored three-straight goals. The Huskies then came back with two goals of their own to make it 5-4. Down a goal with a minute to go, Crowder pulled Husky goalie Keni Gibson. The move didn't work in Northeastern's favor, however, as RPI netted a pair of empty-netters to make the final score 7-4.
Down 5-2 with four minutes remaining in the game, Morris fired home a goal at 16:37 in the third period to make it 5-3. He got assists from Chuck Tomes and Yale Lewis. Then just 33 seconds later, Jason Guerriero netted a goal on a feed from Morris to make it 5-4.
The Huskies fell to a 1-0 deficit just 1:06 into the first period on RPI's Nick Economakos' power-play goal. The score remained 1-0 until the end of the period.
Morris scored his third goal of the season 2:55 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1. RPI evened it at 16:47 in the second on an Andrew Lord goal to take a 2-1 lead into the final period.
Ray Ortiz opened the third period with a goal when he snagged the puck and got it past RPI goalie Jordan Alford. It was Ortiz's second of the season to tie the score at 2-2. RPI then went off for three-straight goals, including a pair by junior Kirk MacDonald, to take a 5-2 lead 14:19 into the third period. Morris' second goal of the game and Guerriero's goal made it 5-4 before the Engineers got a pair of empty-netters.
Power-plays dominated the game once again, with both teams penalized eight times for 16 minutes. The Huskies scored just one power-play goal, while RPI had three.
Northeastern travels to Colgate for a game on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Raiders are ranked 14th in the nation.
