Bryan Cirullo scored the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining in overtime as Northeastern beat 14th-ranked Colgate, 4-3, on Friday night at Starr Arena in Hamilton, N.Y. After a five-goals in the second period, the teams went scoreless for 31:43 before Cirullo's game-winner.
The Huskies notched their second win to improve to 2-3-0 on the season, and previously unbeaten Colgate fell to 4-1-0. The Huskies netted three power-play goals in the victory.
The return of Jared Mudryk and Joe Santilli was successful as the first goal of the game was scored by Mudryk with assists from Cirullo and Santilli on a power-play at 4:47 in the first period. Mudryk was regular in the Husky lineup last season, playing in 29 games with seven goals and eight assists. Santilli redshirted last season after skating in just three games. He scored 10 points in 19 games as a freshman in 2002-03.
The Huskies held the 1-0 lead through the end of the first. The goal marked the first time this season that Northeastern scored first and also the first time the Huskies led after the first period.
The teams alternated goals in the second period. Colgate scored first when Marc Fulton wristed a shot over Gibson's glove-hand at 2:20. The Huskies came back with a power-play goal when Mike Morris fed Bryan Esner on the left wing and Esner finished it off at 4:01. The Raiders kept the ping-pong action going as Jon Smyth scored at 9:56.
The Huskies came back with another power-play goal before the second period was over when Yale Lewis netted one on the rebound of a Morris shot. Colgate capped off the second-period scoring on a 4-on-3 power-play when Smyth netted his second goal of the evening at 13:13. The score was tied 3-3 at the end of the second.
The Huskies host North Dakota next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
