The Huskies mounted a furious comeback to tie North Dakota, 3-3, on a pair of Brian Swiniarski goals on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. The Huskies trailed 3-1 following the second period but dominated the third to tie it.
"It was a tail of two games," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. "The first period was pretty even and the second period they were all over us. In the third period it was just the opposite. We came out great in the third period."
Crowder added that Keni Gibson "made the difference" in the second period when he made an amazing 13 saves. The Huskies are now 2-3-1 this season while North Dakota is 4-2-1.
The down 2-0, Jared Mudryk scored 5:13 into the second period. He shot from just inside the blueline and the puck went off North Dakota goalie Philippe Lamoureux's shoulder and into the net. It was his second goal in his second game of the season. Ray Ortiz and Tim Judy got assists on the play. The Fighting Sioux notched their third goal at 8:06 in the period on a Rory McMahon score to give UND a two-goal cusion.
Then the tides turned as Northeastern outshot North Dakota 12-1 in the third period, and two of those shots resulted in goals. Aided by a 4-on-3 power-play, Brian Swiniarski grabbed the rebound of a Jason Guerriero shot and netted it at 8:06. That score got the Huskies within one goal.
The Huskies drew the tie at 16:37 in the third when Swiniarski netted his second goal of the night. This one came from the left side and Jon Awe and Ray Ortiz assisted.
North Dakota's Travis Zajac scored a pair of first period goals to give the Fighting Sioux a 2-0 lead after the set. UND goalie Philippe Lamoureax made 26 saves on the night.
The Huskies went 1-6 in power-plays while UND went 1-3. North Dakota was plagued by four penalties in less than two minutes in the third period. The all-time series between the two teams is now 6-6-2.
The Huskies look to continue theri momentum when they play Connecticut next Friday at Matthews Arena.
