Jason Guerriero scored two goals as the Huskies rolled to a 5-2 victory over Connecticut on Friday night at Matthews Arena. The first period went scoreless before NU broke out for four straight goals to even its record at 3-3-1 while UConn fell to 1-4-1.
"I thought we played well in the first period but we weren't able to get a goal," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. "We were able to explode a little bit in the second period which was really the difference. It was three quick goals."
The Huskies held UConn scoreless on 7-of-8 power-plays. About the penalty-kill, Crowder said "it was better but we've still got a ways to go. We gave up the 5-on-3 which was more of a positional thing and we've really got to get the guys to take away the shooting lane."
After a scoreless first period, Northeastern blasted out with four unanswered goals in the second period. Guerriero started things off with a power-play goal 32 seconds into the period. He took a pass off the glass from Yale Lewis and potted the goal from the left side.
NU then notched a pair of goals within 16 seconds of each other. Defenseman Steve Birnstill got his first goal of the season when he came across from the left side and beat UConn goalie Brad Smith on his left side at 4:22. Rookie Josh Robertson then netted his second goal of the season with assists from Birnstill and Swiniarski at 4:38.
The Huskies took a 4-0 lead when Jared Mudryk scored his third goal in as many games with assists from Swiniarski and Birnstill. UConn got on the board at 18:24 when J.R. Corkery netted a goal with an assist from Cole Koidahl and Northeastern took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
Guerriero opened the third period with his second goal of the night 1:31 into the frame with assists from Mike Morris and Joe Santilli. UConn's Tim Olsen capped off the game with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 17:43 in the third.
The Huskies dominated play for most of the game, outshooting UConn 44-22. Husky goalie Keni Gibson made 20 saves while Smith checked in with an impressive 39 stops.
The Huskies kick off their Hockey East schedule next weekend when they host Maine at Matthews Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. then travel to Providence for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday.
