The Huskies scored a goal each period as they defeated Providence College, 3-1, on Sunday at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. It was Northeastern's second Hockey East win in as many games and its third win in a row. Brian Swiniarski, Bryan Esner and Jason Guerriero scored for the Huskies, who improve to 5-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Hockey East.
Brian Swiniarski gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead on a 4-on-3 power play as his shot from the bottom of the left face off circle eluded PC goalie David Cacciola at the 15:44 mark of the first period.
The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 at the 12:52 mark of the second period. Lewis Yale was able to control the loose puck at center ice and skated in on a two-on-one rush before making a pass to Bryan Esner, who slid the puck past Cacciola for his third goal of the season.
The Friars found a hole in the Husky defense in the third period to get on the board. Husky netminder Keni Gibson saved a shot from James Pemberton, but PC freshman Jon Rheault was in front for the rebound and chipped it in to cut NUs lead to 2-1.
Guerriero wrapped up the game for the Huskies with an empty-net goal with 3.6 seconds left in the contest.
Gibson had 36 saves in the game, including 17 in the second period. Over the last two games, Gibson has lowered his goals against average from 3.09 to 2.70 and raised his save-percentage from .883 to .909.
Providence outshot Northeastern, 37-27. It was the second game in which NU was outshot but still pulled out a two-goal victory. The Huskies went 1-4 on power-plays while PC went 0-5.
Northeastern has a home-and-home series with New Hampshire next weekend, playing UNH in Durham, N.H. on Friday night and hosting the Wildcats on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
