| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Maine 4, Northeastern 2
Northeastern took a 2-1 lead into the third period on scores by Ray Ortiz and Ryan Ginand but Maine came back with three goals, including an empty-netter, in the third period to top the Huskies, 4-2, in the consolation game of the Florida College Classic on Wednesday at Germain Arena in Estero, Fla. Rookie goalie Doug Jewer made his third start of the season and made 47 saves on 50 shots. Northeastern fell to 1-11-4 and remains 1-6-4 in Hockey East while Maine improved to 12-6-0 and stays 5-4-0 in Hockey East. The game does not count in the Hockey East standings. The Huskies got on the board first on a short-handed goal by Ortiz. With Brian Swiniarski in the penalty box for interference, freshman defenseman Andrew Linard poked the puck loose to Jimmy Russo in the Northeastern zone Russo and Ortiz had a 2-on-1 with a Maine defenseman. Russo got the puck across to a wide-open Ortiz, who shot it past Maine goalie Ben Bishop to give NU a 1-0 lead at 4:15 in the first period. In Ortiz' second game of the season, it was his first goal of the year, the 14th of his career and the second short-handed goal of his career. Linard's assist on the play was the first point of his career. With NU still on the penalty kill, Matti Uusivirta was called for interference at 4:32, giving Maine a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:00. Maine didn't need a minute, as the Black Bears evened the score at 1-1 just 12 seconds into the 5-on-3 when Michel Leveille took a pass from Greg Moore on the right side of the crease and beat Jewer at 4:44. NU killed off the rest of the Maine power play and the score remained 1-1 at the end of the first period. The Huskies added to their lead in the second period when Ginand potted his sixth goal of the season. The play began when Russo made a wrap-around move and Maine's Bishop made the save. There was a cluster in front of the net and Louis Liotti got the puck to Ginand, who finished it from the right side of the crease at 3:33 to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Late in the period, the Huskies got a great opportunity when Maine's Brent Shepheard was charged with a five-minute major for checking from behind and a game-misconduct. Two minutes of the power play was neutralized when Bryan Esner was called for holding at 18:11 and the Huskies resumed the power play in the third period. Eleven seconds into the third, NU finished its power play and generated some great shots from Chuck Tomes, Esner, Joe Vitale but the Huskies didn't pad their lead. Maine got power plays at 3:16 and 7:10 and capitalized on the second to tie the game at 2-2. Maine's Derek Damon took a pass from Mike Lundin on the right side and punched it through for the score at 7:10. Maine took the lead at 8:46 in the third on a Keith Johnson goal from the left circle that Jewer couldn't cover. Northeastern put on the full-court press in the second half of the third period but came up empty. Russo was called for holding at 18:35, giving Maine a power play for the remainder of the game. NU took a timeout with 48 seconds remaining in the game but NU couldn't get the puck out of the defensive zone. Esner took the puck out from behind the net and head coach Greg Cronin pulled Jewer with 10 seconds remaining, which led to an empty-netter by Maine's Moore at 19:54. Northeastern was outshot, 51-18, in the game. The Huskies went 0-for-5 on power plays while Maine went 3-for-11. Northeastern is back in action in 2006 when the Huskies travel to Chestnut Hill to take on Boston College on Friday, Jan. 6 at Conte Forum. The following night, NU hosts Boston University at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio Boston, 890 and 1400 AM, with Rob Rudnick and Bill Doherty.
