The Huskies took a 3-0 loss to Vermont on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse in the first of a two-game series in Burlington, Vt. Northeastern goalie Doug Jewer made 27 saves in the game, including 19 on power plays. It was Vermont's third-straight shutout at home.
Northeastern fell to 1-14-4 overall and 1-9-4 in Hockey East with the loss while Vermont improved to 14-5-2 overall and 6-4-2 in conference play.
The first period went scoreless as Vermont outshot Northeastern, 9-4. Jewer made some great saves in the period as Vermont went scoreless on a pair of power plays.
Vermont came out of the second period with a 3-0 lead that included a pair of breakaway scores. Tom Collingham scored the first Vermont goal when he took a chip-ahead pass from Ben Driver and skated ahead to score at 2:50 in the second. Less than two minutes later, the Catamounts pushed their lead up to two goals when Chris Myers passed the puck from behind the net to Dean Strong, who buried it at 4:48.
The Huskies controlled play for a lot of the second period, including a power play at 9:23 with several scoring opportunities. The hard-pressing Huskies were burned by another breakaway, however, as Brady Leisenring got the puck to Jeff Corey in the neutral zone and Corey beat Jewer on his glove-side to give Vermont a 3-0 lead at 15:51 in the second. NU freshman Ryan Ginand was tossed at 19:03 when he was called for a five-minute major for hitting from behind and a game-misconduct.
The Huskies went into the third period down a man for the first 4:03 and killed off the penalty. The Huskies had some scoring opportunities in the frame, including a 2-on-1 in which Ray Ortiz' shot went just left and a Steve Birnstill power play shot from the point that hit the post.
The Huskies held Vermont's power play to 0-for-7 on the night. UVM had a .226 power-play percentage heading into the game. Vermont outshot Northeastern 30-15 in the game and got 19 off with a man advantage.
Northeastern plays Vermont in the second game of the series on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game begins at 7 p.m. and will be joined in-progress on ESPN Radio Boston, 890 and 1400 AM with Mike Machnik and former NU goaltender Keni Gibson.
