The Huskies fought but came out on the losing end of a 2-1 game against UMass Lowell on Friday night at Matthews Arena. The Huskies travel to Lowell to take on the River Hawks in a rematch on Saturday at 7 p.m. Ryan Ginand scored a power play goal for the Huskies while Todd Fletcher and Danny O'Brien scored for UML.

The Huskies came out with some great scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the game, including shots by Brian Deeth and Brian Swiniarski that were saved by UMass Lowell goalie Peter Vetri. The Huskies couldn't capitalize on 13 first-period shots, however. UMass Lowell got out to a 1-0 lead when Fletcher scored at 10:40 in the first with assists from Elias Godoy and Matt Walsh. The Huskies got on the board at 10:55 in the second period when Ginand scored his eighth goal of the season and his fourth with a man-advantage. Rob Rassey passed the puck from the perimeter to Steve Birnstill, who shot it from the point and Ginand deflected it past Vetri.

UMass Lowell got the lead back at 18:21 in the second when O'Brien scored with assists from Jeremy Hall and Mark Roebothan to make it 2-1. O'Brien shot the puck from behind the net off NU goalie Doug Jewer's skate for the score. UMass Lowell was working with a five-minute major advantage after Joe Vitale was tossed from the game.

Jewer was hurt in the first minute of the third period and was replaced by junior Adam Geragosian after making 23 saves on 25 shots. Geragosian held UMass Lowell scoreless through the remainder of the game with four saves.

Northeastern pressed hard in the third period but couldn't get another goal on the board. NU pulled Geragosian in the final minute of the game and NU created a lot of energy in front of the net, but the River Hawks were able to hold the Huskies off for the 2-1 final.

Northeastern falls to 1-17-4 overall and 1-11-4 in Hockey East while UMass Lowell improves to 9-13-0 and 6-9-0.

Northeastern takes on UMass Lowell looking for a split on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Tsongas Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio Boston, 890 and 1400 AM with Rob Rudnick and Bill Doherty.
