Brian Deeth scored the equalizer in the second period and goalie Adam Geragosian made 29 saves as Northeastern tied No. 6 Boston College, 1-1, before 5,402 fans at Matthews Arena on Saturday night. Northeastern held the Eagles to 1-of-7 on power-play opportunities. It was first-year head coach Greg Cronin's first game at Matthews Arena and his first tie as NU's leader."The crowd was awesome," said Cronin. "Talk about an arena that's great with a crowd, this building is a special place. We saw tonight what kind of potential we have here."
Deeth's second-period goal came at 4:10 on a perfect pass from Carter Lee. Freshman forward Ryan Ginand dumped the puck behind the net and Lee emerged and passed it out right onto the tape of Deeth's stick. Deeth shot it into BC goalie Cory Schneider, who blocked it initially, but Deeth hit it again and it went into the net.
"It was a great job by our forwards," said Deeth.
Lee added, "It was a great effort by Ginand to chuck the puck behind the net. I took it out and heard Deeth screaming so I passed it out to him. I didn't even see what happened after that and then our guys game away with their hands up."
The Huskies entered the second period down, 1-0, after a goal by Dan Bertram. With Lee in the penalty box, NU's Bryan Esner stole the puck and took it into the BC zone. But the Eagles got it back and the momentum shifted as BC had a 3-on-2. Joe Rooney took the puck down the left side and passed it across to Bertram, who beat Geragosian on his glove side.
Late in the third period, both teams created scoring opportunities but neither could get the puck in the net. At 17:30 in the third, BC's Nathan Gerbe made a great move to get past an NU defenseman and got a shot past Geragosian, but the puck hit the post and ricocheted out of the crease. A minute later, Northeastern had a similar opportunity as Bryan Esner passed the puck from behind the net to Louis Liotti on the edge of the crease, but Schneider blocked his shot with his right skate.
Play in the overtime period was back and forth as NU's Chuck Tomes and Esner got shots on goal that were blocked by Schneider. Geragosian made saves on shots by Tim Kunes and Matt Greene. Geragosian made 29 saves in the game while Schneider notched 23 stops.
BC head coach Jerry York said after the game, "It was a gritty, hard-nosed, grindy type of game. Both goalies played well and both teams had their chances."
The Husky penalty-kill unit was in full force against Boston College as Northeastern held BC to 1-of-7 with an advantage. Northeastern went 0-for-3 on power plays.
"We keep shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties," said Cronin. "BC is a heck of a team and the reason we stayed in the game was because our penalty kill settled in after the first couple."
Northeastern racked up 20 penalties for 64 minutes and BC hauled in 15 penalties for 54 minutes. A lot of those penalty minutes came after a dust-up in the second period in which three Northeastern players and three Boston College players each got a pair of two-minute minors and a 10-minute misconduct penalty.
Northeastern takes a break from Hockey East action next weekend when they travel to Rensselaer to take on the Engineers on Friday night before returning home to play the U.S. National Team Development Program on Sunday at Matthews Arena.
