The Huskies came back from a 3-0 deficit to get within a goal but fell, 4-2, to Massachusetts on Saturday at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. The Huskies got scores from Yale Lewis and Bryan Esner and 29 saves from goalie Adam Geragosian. The loss eliminated the Huskies from Hockey East playoff contention.
Down, 3-0, Lewis got the Huskies on the board at 19:44 in the second period. UMass had a delayed penalty called and the Huskies worked to keep possession of the puck for 22 seconds after Geragsosian left the ice. After several battles for the puck along the boards, Brian Deeth passed the puck to Louis Liotti, who fired a shot from the point that Lewis deflected past Massachusetts goalie Gabe Winer for the score. It was Lewis' fourth goal of the season.
The Huskies pulled out all the stops trying to win the game. With the second period winding down, the Huskies lined up for a faceoff with an extra attacker but NU couldn't get a shot off as time ran out.
Esner got the Huskies within a goal when he scored his sixth goal of the season at 4:03 in the third period. He got assists from Joe Santilli and Rob Rassey on the play.
Massachusetts iced it at 15:28 in the third period when P.J. Fenton scored with assists from John Wessbecker and Marvin Degon. It was Degon's third assist of the game. The Huskies took three penalties after UMass' final goal, killing any chance for a comeback.
Massachusetts got out to the lead 1:34 into the game when Alex Berry buried the rebound of a Fenton shot. Jamie Solon gave the Minutemen a 2-0 lead with an assist from Degon at 3:15 in the second period. Another loose rebound led to UMass' third goal at 10:54 in the second period when Stephen Werner shot in the rebound of a Degon shot.
The Huskies were hurt by 12 penalties that resulted in seven Massachusetts power plays and one power-play goal. The Huskies went 0-for-2 on power plays. The loss dropped Northeastern to 3-22-7 overall and 3-15-7 in Hockey East while UMass improved to 13-18-1 and 10-14-1 in the league.
The Huskies will try to play the spoiler next weekend as they take on Boston University in a home-and-home series on Friday at Matthews Arena and Saturday at Agganis Arena. The games will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio Boston 890 and 1400 AM.
