Freshman Ryan Ginand skates in the second period.
Ryan Ginand netted Northeastern's first hat trick since 2002 to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead in the second period, but 12th-ranked New Hampshire came back and won the game, 6-4, on Friday at Matthews Arena before a crowd of 3,628. The goals were the first three of Ginand's career. New Hampshire got the game-winning goal from freshman Thomas Fortney at 5:14 in the third period and freshman Jerry Pollastrone added and insurance goal.

Northeastern's last hat trick was scored by Mike Ryan in a 5-2 win over Harvard in the first round of the Beanpot on Feb. 4, 2002. Ryan had three hat tricks in his career at NU.

"We had some offense," said NU head coach Greg Cronin. "We continued to take some penalties but we got four goals. Ginand, [Joe] Vitale and [Matti] Uusivirta are showing up every night. Tonight, Ginand was in the right place at the right time. He's on a good line."

The Huskies' first win still eluded them, as NU fell to 0-5-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in Hockey East with the loss. New Hampshire improved to 3-3-1 and 2-1-0. Northeastern will try again on Saturday night as they take on the Wildcats at UNH's Whittemore Center to complete the home-and-home series.

Freshman goalie Doug Jewer made the start for Northeastern and made 34 saves on 40 shots. New Hampshire scored the first goal of the game on a power play at 10:46 in the first period when Brian Yandle took a pass from Daniel Winnik and fired it into the top of the net. Fortney scored UNH's second goal at 17:57 in the first and New Hampshire took a 2-0 lead into the second period. It was the first score of Fortney's career.

Ginand began working his magic at 3:56 in the second period when fired a shot past UNH goalie Jeff Petrasiak for an unassisted score. He scored again less than two minutes later when he took a pass from defenseman Steve Birnstill and shot it into Petrasiak's chest. Ginand then picked up the rebound and shot it past Petrasiak at 5:34 to tie the game. Freshman Matti Uusivirta also notched an assist on the play.

With the Huskies on a 5-on-3 power play, Ginand once again took a feed from Birnstill and put it in the net at 16:40 in the second period. Jimmy Russo recorded the second assist on the play. New Hampshire tied the game at 3-3 before the period was over, as Daniel Winnik took a pass from Jacob Micflikier and scored at 18:39.

"My line has been pulling me," said Ginand of Vitale and Uusivirta. "I figured I've got to pull them. They are great players and, down the road, we're only going to get better."

Brett Hemingway gave New Hampshire the lead 29 seconds into the third period when he shot one past Jewer from in front of the net to make it 4-3 with assists from Mike Radja and Josh Ciocco.

Vitale responded two minutes later with his third goal in as many games. Vitale took a pass from Jimmy Russo on a power play and scored at 2:38 in the third to make it 4-4.

New Hampshire's Fortney, a freshman, gave the Wildcats the lead for goot at 5:14 with his second goal of the game and the second of his career. Freshman Jerry Pollastrone added an insurance goal at 7:24 in the third to make the final 6-4.

Saturday's matchup at the Whittemore Center will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio Boston with Greg Madden on play-by-play and Northeastern Associate Athletics Director Ed Stoner on color analysis.
