The Northeastern University men’s hockey team presented its team awards at the team’s annual awards banquet on April 14 at Northeastern’s Alumni Center. Freshman goalie Brad Thiessen collected the team’s top awards, as he was named team MVP and Rookie of the Year.
Thiessen (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Merritt Centennials) was a unanimous selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie team and was the College Hockey News’ All-Rookie goalie in addition to receiving team MVP honors, the Ed Arrington Memorial Rookie of the Year Award and the Chicken Lou Award. He started 33 games in net as a freshman, finishing with a record of 11-17-5. His save percentage of .921 broke the Northeastern single-season record and his 2.48 goals against average ranks second for a season at Northeastern. Thiessen posted four shutouts, which are most ever by an NU freshman and second-most in a single season. He also received several Hockey East weekly awards.
Senior Ray Ortiz (Charlestown, Mass./Belmont Hill) was presented the NU Hockey Veterans’ Unsung Hero Award and Yale Lewis (Carbondale, Colo./River City Lancers) was given the Don McKenney Coach’s Award for team dedication. Ortiz, a center, was one of NU’s top penalty killers and posted a 2-9-11 scoring line while playing all of NU’s 36 games. Lewis posted a 1-2-3 scoring line while playing in 24 games and was praised for being a team leader and contributing in every way he could, on and off the ice.

Esner scored eight goals and had five assists for 13 points while playing all of NU’s 36 games. He scored four short-handed goals, which tied for second in the nation. He received the Frank Jones Award, given to New England’s Best Defensive Forward.
Sophomore defenseman Jacques Perreault (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Boston Bulldogs), who was an instrumental part of Northeastern’s mid-season turnaround, was given the Manager’s Award as Most Improved Player. He had a goal and three assists to go along with a plus-four on-ice rating this season as he played 23 of the team’s final 24 games.
Freshman Chad Costello (Johnston, Iowa/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) was presented the team’s Leading Scorer Award. He had 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in 32 games in 2006-07. He was also a unanimous choice for the Hockey East All-Rookie team, was Hockey East Rookie of the Week several times and Hockey East Rookie of the Month in November.
Junior journalism major Katie Condon was presented the Ferny Flaman Award by the Friends of NU Hockey. The award is presented annually to a benefactor of NU hockey who has demonstrated the commitment and dedication of Flaman to making NU hockey a success. Condon has put in countless hours helping the team with statistics and organization over her four seasons at Northeastern.
