| 2006-07 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Vermont 2
The Huskies came back twice in the second period on goals from sophomore Joe Vitale and freshman David Strathman to tie Vermont, 2-2, on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Jimmy Russo put the puck in the net at 2:22 in overtime but the net was dislodged and the goal was waved off. Joe Santilli shot the puck off Vitale's skate for the first goal and Strathman went end to end on the second. Vermont took a 1-0 in the first period and the teams traded goals to come up tied after two. Vitale's goal got the Huskies on the board at 8:15 in the second period. Santilli got the puck from freshman Kyle Kraemer, faked a pass and then shot the puck, which deflected off Vitale's skate and past Vermont goalie Joe Fallon to make it 1-1. Vermont then re-took the lead when defenseman Art Femenella scored from the right point at 11:14. The Huskies knotted the game back up at 2-2 when Strathman scored at the tail end of a power play. After Vermont cleared the puck, Husky goalie Brad Thiessen steadied it behind the Northeastern net and handed it off to Strathman. Strathman took the puck from end to end and shot it from the right circle behind Fallon at 13:04. The remainder of the period went scoreless and each team came up empty on one power play. "I'm really proud of the guys for staying in it," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin. "It was a fun game to watch and a fun game to play." Vermont came out hard in the first half of the third period but the Husky defense held up and Thiessen made some great saves to keep the puck out of the net. The Huskies had more scoring opportunities in the later half of the period. Santilli created another opportunity when he took the puck down the ice flanked by Kraemer but his shot was saved by Fallon at 16:37. Chad Costello intercepted a pass and created another opportunity but was tied up by the UVM defense. Play stayed in the UVM zone in the final minutes but the period ended and it went into overtime. Neither team could score in the overtime period and each earned a point in the Hockey East game. No penalties were called in the third period or overtime. "I liked the way the refs called the game," said Cronin. "They set the tone early and then let the guys play the game. That's the way it should be." In the first period, three penalties were called on Northeastern and one on Vermont within a span of 34 seconds to give Vermont a 5-on-3 power play at 6:29. The Catamounts capitalized to take the 1-0 lead. With the Huskies down two men, Torrey Mitchell shot a pass to Dean Strong on the corner of the crease and Strong put the puck behind Thiessen at 7:10. After the goal, the Huskies killed off the remaining 1:19 of Vermont power play and then got a power play of their own when Brian Roloff was whistled for tripping at 8:34. The Huskies had some excellent scoring opportunities but couldn't put the puck in the net. Thiessen made some excellent saves in the period, helping hold Vermont to 1-for-4 on the power play in the first period. The Huskies are now 0-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Hockey East while Vermont is 2-0-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Hockey East. Next weekend, Northeastern plays Boston University at Agganis Arena on Friday night and hosts Union for the Huskies' first home game of the season on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Saturday is homecoming night. Both games begin at 7 p.m. Northeastern (0-1-1, 0-1-1) vs. Vermont (2-0-1, 0-0-1)
