Northeastern University led, 2-1, heading into the third period but came away with a 4-3 loss to Bosotn University after a back-and-forth final frame at Agganis Arena on Friday, Oct. 20. Sophomores Dennis McCauley and Joe Vitale scored in the first period and freshman Kyle Kraemer scored his first career goal in the third period for the Huskies.
Northeastern busted out of the gate and took the lead less than a minute into the game. Mike Morris chipped the puck to Chad Costello and Costello took it up ice and made a perfect pass on the tape of McCauley's stick. McCauley shot the puck past BU goalie John Curry to give NU a 1-0 lead at 0:36. The Huskies killed off a 1:49 long 5-on-3 penalty before putting another goal on the scoreboard.
With BU's Jason Lawrence in the penalty box for obstruction-cross checking, the Terriers were able to clear the puck into the Husky zone. Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen came out of the net and passed the puck to McCauley, who fired a rocket shot at Curry. Curry made the save but the rebound went right to Vitale, who had an open shot on net and scored to make it 2-0 at 6:37 in the first period. The Huskies outshot BU, 14-8, in the first.
Thiessen made some great saves in the second period, including a low save on an Eric Thomassian breakaway and a spectacular pad save when Thomassian got a rebound and had a shot on a nearly-wide open net. He couldn't hold the BU offense forever, though, as the Terriers got on the board at 14:31 in the second period. On a BU power play, John McCarthy tipped in a Sean Sullivan shot from the top of the crease to make it 2-1. BU reversed the shot count in the period, outshooting the Huskies, 14-8.
BU center Peter MacArthur scored to tie the game at 8:35 in the third period and then scored to make it 3-2 in favor of the Terriers at 17:16. Both goals were scored on rebounds from Kenny Roche shots. The Huskies had an excellent chance to score when Morris got the puck with Curry out of position, but Lawrence broke up the play and took a penalty. The Huskies came up empty on the ensuing power play.
Northeastern came back to tie it less than a minute later when Louis Liotti passed the puck from the defensive zone to Joe Santilli, who got it over to Vitale. Vitale passed the puck to Kraemer, who shot the puck and got his rebound back and shot again for the goal at 17:57 to make it a 3-3 game.
More scoring chances for each team continued in the final minutes of the game and Boston University sank the game-winner, a Roche shot at 19:04. The Huskies pulled Thiessen in the final minute of the game but NU took a penalty for too many men on the ice, which neutralized the Husky advantage.
Thiessen made 35 saves in the game while Curry made 28. Northeastern the loss drops the Huskies to 0-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in Hockey East while Boston University improves to 1-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Hockey East.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday for Homecoming night when they take on Union College at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available.
