It was Northeastern's first win of the season and the Huskies' first home game. NU improves to 1-2-1 overall with the victory and Union drops to 2-1-1. Northeastern's penalty kill was spectacular, holding Union scoreless on 12 power plays, including a five-minute major and a 5-on-3.
With Northeastern's Chad Costello in the penalty box, defenseman Louis Liotti jarred the puck loose and passed it to Vitale, who took it up ice and had a give and go with Joe Santilli. Santilli made a perfect pass back to Vitale, who shot it past Union goalie Justin Mrazek to give the Huskies the lead.
Northeastern got on the board again at 9:17 in the first when Ray Ortiz passed the puck to Andrew Linard and Linard fired a bulled over Mrazek's shoulder for his first goal of the season. Freshman Chris Donovan got his first career assist on the play.
In his first game of the season, Rob Rassey made in impact when he set up Ryan Ginand's first goal of the season. Rassey took the puck up ice and made a cross-ice pass through traffic that Ginand was able to bury to make it 3-0 in favor of the Huskies at 10:31 in the first. Union pulled Mrazek after the goal and replaced him with freshman Rich Sillery.
The second period was mele as 19 total penalties were called – nine on Union and 10 on Northeastern. Both teams went scoreless in the frame as both Geragosian and Sillery made eight saves a piece.
The Huskies iced it in the third period with two more goals, but had to work to keep Union off the board. Geragosian made 12 third-period saves to preserve his second career shutout and the Husky defense blocked four more shots.
With Union on a power play, Bryan Esner scored his first goal of the season on a feed from Ortiz at 14:42. It would have been Esner's third-career short-handed goal but he was robbed by the clock as Liotti's interference penalty expired at the same time.
After getting his first career assist in the first period, Donovan scored his first career goal at 15:35 with Ortiz's third helper of the game. Defenseman Denis Chisholm fired a shot from the left circle that Sillery saved. Ortiz batted the rebound to Donovan, who put it in the net.
For the second-straight season, Geragosian posted a shutout to get the Huskies their first win of the season. He had his first career shutout on Nov. 11, 2005 to get the Huskies a 2-0 win over Massachusetts at Matthews Arena, their first win of the 2005-06 season.
Northeastern travels to Michigan this weekend to take on the Wolverines on Friday and Saturday with both games at 7:35 p.m. In their last meeting on Oct. 8, 2004, Northeastern knocked off then-No. 1 Michigan, 4-2, in the first game of the Lefty McFadden Invitational.
