Northeastern took a 1-0 lead after the first period on a Mike Morris goal, but 13th-ranked New Hampshire came back with three in the second period to take a 3-1 victory over Northeastern before a crowd of 3,596 on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Goalie Brad Thiessen made 22 saves for the Huskies while Trevor Smith had a goal and an assist for New Hampshire.
The loss put Northeastern's record at 2-5-1 overall and 0-4-1 in Hockey East while New Hampshire improved to 4-2-0 and 2-1-0 in Hockey East. New Hampshire swept the weekend series after last night's 6-3 UNH win.
Morris opened up the scoring when he potted his third power-play goal of the season at 9:40 in the first period. With New Hampshire's Brett Hemingway in the penalty box for cross checking, Chad Costello passed the puck from the right point to Steve Birnstill on the left point. Birnstill passed the puck down low to Morris, who shot the puck off New Hampshire goalie Kevin Regan's back and into the net to make it 1-0 in favor of Northeastern. For Morris and Costello, it was their fourth-straight game recording points.
New Hampshire turned the tables in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. Smith scored his first of the night when Matt Fornataro got the puck behind the Huskies' net. Fornataro passed it to Smith, who was open in front of the net, and Smith beat Thiessen at 14:42 in the second.
New Hampshire took the lead when Chris Murray scored on a slapshot from the right point at 17:57 in the second. Thiessen went behind the net and tried to clear the puck but a New Hampshire player intercepted it along the boards. Murray ended up with it via assists from Smith and Fornataro and shot it in.
New Hampshire made it 3-1 on a power play at 19:23 in the third. With NU's Dennis McCauley in the box for cross checking, UNH was cycling the puck and Brett Hemingway passed it to Jamie Fritch, who shot it through traffic past Thiessen.
Northeastern had many scoring chances and outshot New Hampshire, 30-24, but couldn't capitalize. Northeastern went 1-for-7 on power plays while UNH went 1-for-6.
Northeastern takes on Massachusetts at the Mullins Center next Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston, 890 AM and 1400 AM, and on WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM.
