| 2006-07 Schedule/Results Massachusetts 2, Northeastern 1
The Huskies got out to the lead on a Mike Morris goal but Massachusetts scored twice to take a 2-1 win over the Huskies on Friday night at the Mullins Center. Morris got assists from Steve Birnstill and Kyle Kraemer while the Minutemen got goals from Mark Matheson and Chris Davis. NU goalie Brad Thiessen made 28 saves. "A lot of scoring chances were generated off the power play by both teams but most of the game was played between the bluelines. It was a sloppy, trappy game," said Northeastern coach Greg Cronin. "UMass got the better scoring chances in the third period." The first period went scoreless as the Huskies shut down the UMass offense on three power plays. Northeastern skaters blocked seven shots while Thiessen made five saves on the penalty kill and eight stops overall in the period. The Huskies had some solid scoring opportunities but UMass sophomore netminder Jon Quick was also sharp, making six saves in the frame. Massachusetts forward Brett Watson took a penalty at 19:59 in the first period, giving the Huskies a power play to start the second. The Huskies took advantage as Morris scored his fourth goal of the season with a shot from the point 20 seconds into the second. Chad Costello passed the puck from down low to Steve Birnstill, who cycled it to Kyle Kraemer. Kraemer sent it back to Birnstill who fed Morris at the left point and Morris wristed it high over Quick's shoulder to give NU a 1-0 lead. UMass came back to tie it at 6:44 in the second period when Quick passed the puck to Scott Crowder, who took it down the right side fed an open Matheson with a centering pass. Matheson got the puck past Thiessen's stick side to tie it at 1-1. Massachusetts started the third period on a power play as NU's Andrew Linard was called for cross checking at 20:00 in the second. The Huskies' penalty kill was strong and held off the UMass attack. The Huskies had a great scoring chance at 3:40 in the third period when David Strathman shot the puck from the point and Ryan Ginand deflected it, but Quick came up with a great glove save to end the play. UMass took a 2-1 lead on a Davis deflection at 10:36 in the third period. Justin Braun took a shot from the middle that Davis tipped. Thiessen made the initial stop but the puck squeaked past the goal line. Matheson also got an assist on the play. The Huskies nearly scored at 17:01 when Morris shot the puck from the front of the crease and hit the pipe but the puck went through the crease behind Quick and cleared away. The Huskies got another scoring opportunity when UMass's Matt Anderson was called for obstruction-hooking at 18:44 in the third period. Thiessen left the ice after the ensuing faceoff, giving the Huskies a six-on-four. The Huskies cycled the puck between Morris, Birnstill, Kraemer and Costello but couldn't get a solid shot off and the game ended 2-1, UMass. The Huskies fell to 2-6-1 overall and 0-5-1 in Hockey East with the loss while UMass improved to 5-1-1 and 4-1-0. The Huskies are back in action Tuesday when they take on Providence College at Schneider Arena. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM. Hockey Game Box Score
