Senior Mike Morris scored with 2.6 seconds left in regulation to lift Northeastern to a 3-3 tie against No. 7 Boston College before a crowd of 5,173 at Matthews Arena on Friday night. The Huskies also got goals from freshmen Randy Guzior and Chad Costello and goalie Brad Thiessen made 27 saves.
On the game-tying play, Rob Rassey won the faceoff and got the puck back to Costello. Costello shot the puck through traffic and BC goalie Cory Schneider made the save. Morris came in from the left circle and slapped the rebound into the net to tie the score at 3-3 at 19:57 in the third period.
"I was just trying to get in there and tap it in," said Morris. "It was awesome in here tonight. The crowd was crazy and it was a great place to play."
Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin said "I've never been involved in a game like that that was so exciting and still so slippery." He added that the game was an "event and when a college hockey game is played in an atmosphere like that, it's really special."
BC scored at 11:43 in the first period and the Huskies evened the score before the period was over on Guzior's goal. The Eagles were trying to take the puck up the ice but NU freshman Kyle Kraemer broke up the play near the boards at center ice. Kraemer backhanded the puck to Guzior, who took it into the right circle and netted a shot over Schneider's shoulder at 19:32.
Northeastern scored its second goal to take a 2-1 lead at 17:32 in the second period. Morris stole the puck from a BC player between the bluelines and nudged it ahead to Costello. Costello took the puck into the BC zone, shot it and followed his shot to the crease and beat Schneider for the score.
Boston College had taken the lead on a power play when Brett Motherwell took a shot from the right point and Ben Smith knocked in the rebound from the corner of the crease at 11:43. Seven penalties were called in the first period, including a five-minute major on Mike Brennan for boarding at 19:49, but the Huskies weren't able to capitalize on that advantage in the start of the second period.
BC scored two goals in the early part of the third period to take the lead before the Huskies tied the game in the final seconds. Brian Boyle scored with a slapshot from the outside on a power play at 1:01 in the third. Benn Ferriero gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead when he scored at 5:33 in the third.
In overtime, both teams created scoring opportunities and the play went back and forth. Boston College had a golden opportunity when Brock Bradford intercepted a pass and took the puck in all alone. Bradford skated to Thiessen's stick-side and shot it but Thiessen stretched out and made a toe-save. The Huskies had a great chance to score when Morris passed the puck to an open Rassey, but Rassey's shot sailed wide.
"It was a great atmosphere to play in with such a big crowd," said Boston College coach Jerry York. "There were a lot of chances both ways. It was disappointing to lose the last faceoff and get scored on but we created a lot of good chances."
With the tie, Northeastern is 2-7-2 overall and 0-6-2 in Hockey East. Boston College is 6-3-1 and 3-1-1.
The Huskies are back in action next Saturday when they host New Hampshire at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM.
