| 2006-07 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Merrimack 0
Freshman goalie Brad Thiessen turned in a 30-save shutout to lead the Huskies to a 2-0 win and a weekend sweep over Merrimack on Saturday at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. Freshman Chad Costello scored the game-winner and freshman Chris Donovan scored an insurance goal. It was Thiessen's first career shutout. Thiessen made 22 saves on 23 shots the night before in a 4-1 Husky victory over Merrimack for a .981 save percentage on the weekend. It was Northeastern's first weekend sweep since March 5-6, 2004, when the Huskies swept Massachusetts in a home-and-home series. Costello got scored his sixth goal of the season at 10:53 in the second period and it proved to be the only score the Huskies needed. Costello carried the puck through the Merrimack zone, made a great move down low and got a shot off, which Merrimack goalie Jim Healy stopped. The rebound went right back to Costello and he shot it into the net. Jimmy Russo and Andrew Linard got assists on the play. The Huskies made it 2-0 when Dennis McCauley made a crisp pass to Donovan, who scored on a slapshot from the left side. The puck went off Healy and into the net at 18:02. It was Donovan's third career goal. The Huskies had some other great scoring chances in the second period. At 7:00 in the second, Ray Ortiz had a great setup on a rush up the ice, but Donovan couldn't get his stick on it in front of the net. A minute later, Costello got a shot on a Russo rebound, but Healy made a great save on the play. Thiessen made some highlight-reel saves in the game for the shutout. In perhaps his best play of the game in the third period, Merrimack had a breakaway and Thiessen came out of the net to make a poke save. Matt Byrnes followed the play and shot the rebound but Thiessen stuffed him with his left pad. Northeastern held Merrimack scoreless on five power plays, including two 5-on-3 advantages in the game. The game was high on penalties for the second night in a row, as 29 penalties were called 99 minutes. Many penalties were matching. With the Huskies' league victory, NU moved into a tie with UMass Lowell for eighth in the Hockey East standings. Northeastern improved to 4-8-2 overall and 2-7-2 in Hockey East while Merrimack dropped to 1-12-1 and 1-8-0. Northeastern is back in action next Saturday when it hosts Maine at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
