Northeastern University capped off a three-point weekend with the third 0-0 tie in school history, as goalie Brad Thiessen made 26 saves to stop Boston University on Saturday at Agganis Arena. BU goalie John Curry made 20 saves. Northeastern topped Boston College, 3-2, in overtime on Friday night at Matthews Arena. The Huskies' last 0-0 tie came on Feb. 14, 2004 against Maine at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies are 4-2-1 in their last seven games and, with the tie, move to 6-10-3 overall and 3-8-3 in Hockey East. Boston University is now 8-4-6 overall and 5-3-5 in Hockey East.
The first period went scoreless, with Boston University holding a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. BU had its best scoring chance of the period when Jason Lawrence passed the puck from the left circle to Ryan Weston at the top of the crease. Weston redirected the puck but Thiessen made the save and the Husky defense cleared it. The Huskies' best opportunity came with BU's Kevin Schaeeffer in the penalty box for obstruction interference. Steve Birnstill got a shot on net from the right point and Randy Guzior was in front for the rebound but Curry covered it.
The second period went the way of the first and it remained 0-0 heading into the third. Each team missed some scoring opportunities toward the end of the period. With the Huskies on a power play, David Strathman made a good pass to Ray Ortiz down low, but Curry saved Ortiz's shot at 15:21. On a similar play a minute later, Strathman set up Dennis McCauley down low and Curry was out of position, but McCauley's shot went wide. The Terriers had a great scoring shot when sophomore Chris Higgins had a breakaway, but Thiessen made a great save on Higgins' shot.
With the Huskies on a power play in the third period, Birnstill got a good one-timer off after a faceoff in the BU zone, but Curry made the glove save at 17:00. A minute later, Birnstill chipped the puck in from the neutral zone and Joe Vitale and Ryan Ginand both had scoring chances but couldn't convert. BU kept the puck in the Huskies' zone in the final minute of the game but Thiessen and the Husky defense denied the Terriers. Northeastern outshot BU in the period, 9-8.
In the overtime period, Thiessen made a great save on a turnaround shot from Peter MacArthur at 2:20. Louis Liotti had a good shot from the point and Kyle Kraemer got a shot on the rebound, but Curry made both saves. Lawrence nearly won it for the Terriers with just over a minute left on a shot from the top of the crease but Thiessen made another great save. Boston University finished the game with an onslaught in the final minute but Thiessen kept the puck out of the net. Along with the 0-0 tie against Maine on Feb. 14, 2004, Northeastern's other 0-0 tie came against Boston College on Dec. 6, 2000 at Matthews Arena. In the first game, Mike Gilhooly was in goal against BC's Scott Clemmensen and, in the second game, Keni Gibson was in goal against Maine's Jimmy Howard.
The Huskies host Vermont for two games next Friday and Saturday at Matthews Arena. Northeastern came back to tie the Catamounts, 2-2, in their only meeting of the season on Oct. 14. Both games begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio 104.9 FM.
