Freshman Chad Costello scored two goals and had two assists and senior Mike Morris had four assists in his first game since an appendectomy as the Huskies rolled to a 6-2 win over UMass Lowell on Friday night at Tsongas Arena. Freshman Kyle Kraemer also scored twice.
Northeastern improved to 7-11-4 overall and 4-9-4 in Hockey East while UMass Lowell dropped to 3-16-5 and 2-11-2. The teams rematch on Saturday at Matthews Arena to complete the weekend series.
The score was tied at 1-1 just over a minute into the game. The Huskies struck first when Morris passed the puck to Louis Liotti on the right point. Liotti shot the puck down low and Costello deflected it past UMass Lowell goalie Vinny Monaco 29 seconds into the game. UMass Lowell came right back to tie it up when Kory Falite took the puck into the Northeastern zone himself and shot it into NU goalie Brad Thiessen's left pad. The puck trickled past the goal line to make it 1-1 at 1:17 in the first.
Northeastern got back on top when Kraemer scored his fourth goal of the season at 9:57 in the first. Costello chipped the puck up between the bluelines where Kraemer grabbed it. He took it into the UMass Lowell zone, made a head fake and shot it past Monaco on his glove side inside the post.
The Huskies got another goal on the board before the first period was over. Jacques Perreault passed the puck forward from mid ice and the puck went off Greg Costa to Randy Guzior. Guzior took it up the middle and snapped a shot just under the crossbar to make it 3-1 at 19:28 in the first period. It was Guzior's fifth goal of the season.
Northeastern was back at it in the second period when Kraemer scored his second goal of the game and fifth of the season at 3:28. Morris passed the puck from the right circle to Costello in front of the crease. Costello got the puck to Kraemer, who was in perfect position on the left side and flipped the puck high for the score.
UMass Lowell brought the game back within two goals when freshman Frank Stegnar scored on the rebound of a Mike Potacco shot on the left side at 9:06. His third goal of the season made it 4-2.
Northeastern scored two more insurance goals as the game wore down to make it 6-2. With two minutes to go, UMass Lowell pulled Monaco and Esner potted an empty-netter from the Northeastern blueline to make it 5-2 at 18:56. With Monaco back in for the final minute, Morris got the puck in the UMass Lowell zone and passed it to Costello, who scored at 19:18 to make it a 6-2 final.
Northeastern hosts UMass Lowell to complete the weekend series on Saturday at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM. There will also be live web video at the game.
