| 2006-07 Schedule/Results Northeastern 6, Maine 1
Freshman Greg Costa scored the first two goals of his collegiate career and sophomore defenseman Jacques Perreault added his first collegiate talley as the Huskies took a 6-1 win over Maine at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine on Friday night. Maine scored the first goal of the game before the Huskies came back to score three times in the second and three times in the third period. Northeastern improved to 9-11-4 overall and 6-9-4 in Hockey East with the victory. The Huskies are 4-1-2 in January and all four were Hockey East contests. Maine fell to 15-7-2 and 8-7-1 with the loss. The teams rematch on Saturday at Alfond Arena. It was Northeastern's first win at Alfond Arena since a 5-3 win on Feb. 5, 1998 and the first time NU scored five or more goals against Maine since a 6-4 win at Matthews Arena on Dec. 4, 1999. Down, 1-0, entering the second period, Perreault's goal evened it and got the momentum going in the Huskies' direction. Chad Costello knocked the puck to Joe Vitale in left circle and Vitale got a shot on Maine goalie Ben Bishop. Bishop turned Vitale's shot away and the puck went right to Perreault on the right side. Perreault knocked a slapshot off Bishop's glove and into the net to tie it at 1-1 at 1:01 in the second. Northeastern kept it going with a power-play goal from Costello to take a 2-1 lead. Kyle Kraemer got the puck from Steve Birnstill and had it on the left point. Two Maine defenders moved over to block a Kraemer attempt. Kraemer saw an open lane and sent a perfect pass to Costello on the far side of the crease and Costello redirected it behind Bishop at 5:41. Before the second was over, Costa scored to lift the Huskies to a 3-1 lead. With Maine challenging in the Northeastern zone, Birnstill intercepted a pass and sent it toward neutral ice. Costa picked it up, took it into the Maine zone and beat Bishop on his glove side at 18:36. The Huskies continued their momentum in the third period. Mike Morris intercepted a pass in the Maine zone for a breakaway and beat Bishop to make it 4-1 just 2:58 into the third. Dave Wilson (three saves) replaced Bishop (21 saves) after the goal. Michel Leveille delivered a vicious hit on Vitale and was called for a five-minute major for hitting from behind and a game misconduct at 4:28 in the third. The Huskies capitalized just before the power play ran out when Jim Driscoll put a hard slapshot on net and Dennis McCauley and Randy Guzior were in front to clean up the rebound. Guzior put it past Wilson for his sixth goal of the season. Costa capped teh game off for the Huskies with his second goal of the game on a feed from Jimmy Russo at 12:16 in the third. The Huskies played an excellent first period, outshooting Maine, 12-7, but ended up in a 1-0 hole. Leveille scored on a shot from the right point with an assist from Teddy Purcell at 10:16. The Huskies had some excellent scoring chances in the period, including some 2-on-1s. With just under two minutes to go in the period, Costello took the puck up ice and was in great position to take a shot but the net was knocked off by Morris, who was tripped up by Maine's Rob Bellamy. Bellamy was called for interference on the play. Northeastern and Maine rematch on Saturday night at Alfond Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM.
