Northeastern took Maine into overtime but settled for a weekend split when Teddy Purcell scored at 4:17 in the extra frame to lift Maine to a 2-1 win over Northeastern on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. The Huskies led early on a Chad Costello goal before the Black Bears tied it late in the second period.
Northeastern topped Maine, 6-1, on Friday night at Alfond Arena and, after Saturday, the Huskies are 9-12-4 overall and 6-10-4 in Hockey East. Maine is 16-7-2 and 9-7-1 in Hockey East at the end of the weekend.
Northeastern got out to a 1-0 lead when Kyle Kraemer took the puck into the Maine zone and made a great play to draw Maine's Ben Bishop out of the net. With Bishop sprawling, Kraemer dropped the puck to Costello, who picked it up and put it into the net at 17:38 in the first period. Steve Birnstill got an assist on the play after getting the puck to Kraemer.
The Huskies killed off three Maine power plays in the first period and came up scoreless on one power play of their own. Jacques Perreault had one of the best scoring opportunities of the period when he rang a shot off the post from the right circle. NU goalie Brad Thiessen made five saves in the frame.
The Huskies took three more penalties in the second period and Maine found the back of the net on its sixth power play of the night. With Perreault in the penalty box for contact to the head-roughing, Maine's Bret Tyler smoked a slapshot from the right circle and Billy Ryan tipped it past Thiessen at 18:41. The goal tied the game at one heading into the third period, which saw neither team find the back of the net.
In overtime, Bret Tyler got the puck across the middle to an open Purcell, who put the puck in the open net from the right side.
Thiessen made 31 saves in the game and 60 saves on 63 shots on the weekend. Bishop made 16 saves to earn the win for Maine. Northeastern did well to control the Maine power play, holding the Black Bears to one goal on seven opportunities. The Huskies could not score on their three man-advantage opportunities, including two chances in the third period.
Northeastern is back in action next Friday when the Huskies host Merrimack at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be on television on NESN and on the radio on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM. The following Monday, the Huskies take on Boston University in the first round of the Beanpot Tournament at the TD Banknorth Garden at 5 p.m.
