| 2006-07 Schedule/Results Boston College 3, Northeastern 0
Huskies goalie Brad Thiessen made 26 saves but Northeastern University couldn't get on the board, falling to No. 6 Boston College, 3-0, in the first game of the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Thursday night at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The teams will rematch on Friday night in the best-of-three series. Brock Bradford had a pair of goals and Ben Smith had a goal and an assist for the Eagles. Northeastern fell to 13-17-5 on the season while Boston College improved to 23-11-1. Boston College took a 1-0 lead after the first period on Bradford's first goal. Brian Boyle passed the puck ahead to Nathan Gerbe and Gerbe and Bradford took it in for a 2-on-1. Gerbe fired the puck across the middle to Bradford, who put it behind Thiessen at 18:21 for the goal. Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play in the first period. BC's Mike Brennan took a five-minute major for hitting from behind and a game-misconduct 41 seconds into the second period, giving the Huskies some great scoring opportunities. After a sustained cycle, Steve Birnstill passed the puck to Joe Vitale, who got a shot off from down low and BC goalie Cory Schneider made the save. The loose puck went to Dennis McCauley in front, but Schneider was the once again to make the save. The Huskies went scoreless on the major. On a BC power play in the second period, Thiessen made two spectacular saves but couldn't stop a third-straight shot as Boston College's Smith scored to make it 2-0. Thiessen saved a point-blank shot by Smith and the rebound went to Gerbe, who shot it from the point. Thiessen saved that shot but the rebound went back to Smith in front and he put it away at 6:06 in the second period to make it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles. Vitale was in the penalty box for holding and he and Boyle were each called for roughing after that play. Northeastern got a great short-handed scoring chance in the third period with Denis Chisholm in the penalty box for cross checking. Bryan Esner got the puck and streaked down the right side, beating a BC defenseman to get a shot off but Schneider made the save. The rebound went straight out and Jimmy Russo came up the middle for a shot but Schneider filled the net once again. A minute later with BC still on the power play, Bradford hit the post. The Eagles made it 3-0 at 12:06 in the third period with Bradford's second goal of the game. Smith took the puck in on the left side on an odd-man rush and fired it at Thiessen, who made the save. The puck went right to Bradford's tape on the left and he put it into the open net. Gerbe also got an assist on the play, giving him three for the game. Schneider made 25 saves for the shutout as Boston College outshot Northeastern, 29-25, in the game. NU led the shot count, 20-16, after two periods but was outshot, 13-5, by the Eagles in the third. The Huskies went 0-for-3 on power plays while BC went 1-for-6. Northeastern will be back at Conte Forum on Friday night to take on the Eagles in the second game of the Hockey East Quarterfinals at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM and live web video will be on B2 Networks.
