Northeastern University took the lead on a Ryan Ginand goal in the first period but the Huskies couldn't hold the Boston College offense back, falling 7-1 in the second game of the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Friday night at Conte Forum. The loss eliminated the Huskies from the Hockey East Tournament. The Eagles got two goals and an assist from Benn Ferriero in the first period to put the game out of reach.
The Huskies finished the season with a 13-18-5 overall record and a 9-13-5 record in Hockey East. It was a 10-win improvement overall and a six-win improvement in the league. Thiessen posted a .921 save percentage, breaking the single-season record of .919 by Keni Gibson in 2004-05. He posted a goals against average of 2.48, which ranks second in Northeastern history behind Gibson's 2.46, also set in 2004-05.
Northeastern got out to a 1-0 lead on Ginand's goal at 2:11 in the first period. A Boston College defenseman turned the puck over in the defensive zone and Ginand took it up the slot and beat Boston College goaltender Cory Schneider on his stick side for his sixth goal of the season.
The Huskies had some other solid scoring opportunities early in the first period. Just over a minute into the game, Joe Vitale made a great pass from the corner to Kyle Kraemer, but Schneider saved Kraemer's shot. At the seven-minute mark, Chris Donovan dropped a pass to Jimmy Russo, but Schneider was there once again to make the save. A few minutes later, Chad Costello passed the puck across to Bryan Esner on a rush and Esner beat his defenseman and got the shot off to no avail.
In the second half of the first period, the flood gates opened for the Eagles. First came a Joe Rooney goal off the rebound of a Ferriero shot at 12:42 to make it 1-1. Then the Huskies got into penalty trouble, leading to three-straight power-play goals before the period was over. Ferriero scored at 16:10 and 18:02. His first goal came with a shot through traffic that hit a stick in front and trickled past Thiessen with Yale Lewis in the penalty box for holding.
The Eagles then capitalized on a 5-on-3 penalty with Russo in the box for tripping and Ray Ortiz in for obstruction-interference. Ferriero took a top-shelf shot that beat Thiessen to make it 3-1. With the goal, Russo came out of the box to help on the penalty kill but the Eagles capitalized once again on the ensuing 5-on-4. Two crisp passes -- the first from Brett Motherwell on the point to Nathan Gerbe on the right, then from Gerbe to Brock Bradford on the left -- left Bradford with an open net to make it 4-1 BC at 19:40 in the first period.
The Huskies had three power plays to open the second period, including a 5-on-3 for 1:20 when Matt Lombardi and Ferriero were called for cross-checking and slashing, respectively. The Huskies put shots on net but couldn't score. The Eagles then went off for three more goal, starting with a spin-around, top-shelf goal from Brian Boyle on the power play at 8:53.
The Huskies then put more pressure on Schneider to no avail. That was when BC got goals from Bertram and Lombardi to make it 7-1. Bertram poked in a loose puck in front at 13:49. Huskies head coach Greg Cronin then replaced Thiessen with senior Adam Geragosian. Lombardi then netted his first goal of the season at 15:42.
Boston College moves on to the Hockey East Semifinals next Friday at the TD Banknorth Garden. BC's opponent will be determined at the conclusion of the other three Hockey East Quarterfinals.
