Northeastern's Randy Guzior and David Strathman scored the final two goals of regulation to force overtime, but UMass Lowell's Paul Worthington scored in OT to propel the River Hawks to a 5-4 win over Northeastern on Friday night at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. UML's Mike Potacco had a hat trick and NU's Wade MacLeod had a goal and two assists.

With the loss, Northeastern hits .500 for the first time since Nov. 16, when the Huskies were 4-4-1. Northeastern is now 14-14-3 overall and 11-11-2 in Hockey East. UMass Lowell got back over .500 to 14-13-4 overall and 9-11-4 in Hockey East.

Down, 4-2, in the third period, Greg Costa got the Huskies rally started when he banked a pass off the boards to Dennis McCauley. McCauley took the puck in on the left side and shot it off UMass Lowell goalie Carter Hutton's pad, generating a big rebound for Guzior to fire in the net. That got the Huskies within a goal at 9:58.

Northeastern continued its late-game momentum when MacLeod passed the puck to Steve Silva, who sped into the UML zone with a defender. Silva dropped a pass to Strathman, who fired it top shelf past Hutton to tie the game at 11:08 in the third. Northeastern outshot UMass Lowell 11-7 in the third period.

UMass Lowell generated most of the chances in overtime and got five shots on goal. Worthington ended the game when he got the puck near the UMass Lowell goal line and sped into the Northeastern zone. He got by the defense and fired a shot past Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen at 3:26 to lift the River Hawks to the win.

Northeastern outchanced UMass Lowell for most of the first period and had some excellent scoring opportunities. Chris Donovan had a point-blank slapshot and Tyler McNeely got a shot off from in front but Hutton made the save each time.

McNeely took a boarding penalty at 16:05 and UMass Lowell was able to get some momentum late in the first period. Potacco got open in front and fired a shot past Thiessen to for the first goal of the game at 19:18 in the first period. Mark Roebothan and Scott Campbell got assists on the play.

NU's Joe Vitale was called for contact to the head-high sticking at 19:50, which kept River Hawks rolling. UML's Maury Edwards scored a power-play goal when he put in the rebound of a Kory Falite shot just 37 seconds into the second period.

MacLeod got Northeastern on the board less than a minute later. Vitale threaded a pass through the middle to MacLeod on the far side and MacLeod put it behind Hutton at 1:19 to make it 2-1.

Potacco scored his second goal of the game, a short-hander, at 10:35 in the second period. He stole the puck at the Northeastern blueline and sped in for a breakaway, getting a shot past Thiessen low on his stick side.

Vitale got the Huskies back within a goal at 14:08 in the second period. A UMass Lowell player tried to clear the puck but Jim Driscoll kept it in the zone and deflected it to Strathman in the middle. Strathman passed it to MacLeod, who was open on the right side and MacLeod sent it to the front of the net, where Vitale was able to put it in the net.

Potacco's third goal of the game at 17:11 in the second period got UMass Lowell out to a 4-2 lead before the Huskies came back in the third.

It was Northeastern's first overtime loss since Jan. 27, 2007, a 2-1 loss to Maine at Alfond Arena. Thiessen made 31 saves in the game and Hutton stopped 27 shots.

It was junior defenseman Louis Liotti's 100th career game at Northeastern. An assistant captain, he has two goals and 12 assists and has missed just one game since coming to NU.

Northeastern and UMass Lowell rematch on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Matthews Arena. It will be the final meeting of the regular season for the two teams. The game will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio and will have live audio and video on GoNU.TV.
