| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Vermont 1 (OT)
Dennis McCauley scored on the rebound of a David Strathman shot at 3:33 in overtime to lift Northeastern to a 2-1 win over Vermont in the second game of the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Kyle Kraemer also scored and goalie Brad Thiessen made 34 saves. The best-of-three series is tied at 1-1 after Vermont took a 1-0 game on Friday night. The deciding game will be on Sunday at 7 p.m. Northeastern improved to 16-17-3 overall and Vermont is 15-14-7 after losing. Northeastern was the No. 6 seed in the tournament with a 12-13-2 Hockey East record while Vermont got the No. 3 after going 13-9-5 in Hockey East. On the winning play, Louis Liotti passed the puck from the right boards to David Strathman at the middle point. Strathman fired a shot and McCauley was in front and put in the rebound. The bench cleared in celebration. The game was fast paced from the opening faceoff. Just 1:14 into it, Vermont got a puck through the crease behind Thiessen but the play ended when the net was knocked off. The Huskies had several good scoring chances as the period went on, including one each by Dylan Wiwchar and Greg Costa shortly after the three-minute mark. Northeastern had a five-on-three for a minute when Slavomir Tomko was called for hooking at 7:20 and Reese Wisnowski was called for tripping at 8:20. NU had several shots on goal over that span but Vermont consistently cleared the puck. Vermont scored on a fluky play at 15:29 in the first period. A Northeastern defenseman tried to clear the puck and it went off referee Jeff Bunyon's skate. The puck went right to Peter Lenes, who passed it to Dean Strong. Strong shot it off the post and Colin Vock shot the rebound in for the score. The second period was wild and the Huskies came out on top with the only score of the frame. With Vermont's Chris Atkinson in the penalty box for interference, the Huskies cycled the puck around the Vermont zone. Ryan Ginand passed it from the left side to Liotti at the point. Liotti passed it down low to Kraemer, who shot it off a defenseman in front for the score at 2:17. There were six Vermont penalties and two on NU in the second period. Thiessen was excellent again in the second, making 11 saves. He stopped two breakaways in a row by Vock, the first to the short side and the second with a low pad save. Vermont goalie Joe Fallon made a great save on a Kraemer shot at 15:53. The third period was back-and-forth all the way, with Vermont outshooting Northeastern 8-5. The period went scoreless with one Vermont penalty and two on the Huskies. In the final seconds of the game, Strong had a great opportunity on the left side of the crease but his shot hit the side of the net and the buzzer sounded. Vermont appeared to score the game-winner at 2:33 in overtime when Patrick Cullity buried a shot in close from the left side. But Cullity drew a cross checking penalty right before he got the puck and it was ruled no goal. Cullity went to the penalty box and the power play resulted in McCauley's game-winner. Sunday's game at 7 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio and it will have live video on B2TV. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
