| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Vermont 4, Northeastern 1
Jimmy Russo scored to make it a 1-1 tie at 3:47 in the third period, but Vermont came back with three goals, including an empty-netter, to beat Northeastern 4-1 on Sunday at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. It was the third and deciding game of the Hockey East Quarterfinals and Vermont earned a trip to the Hockey East Semifinals on Friday at the TD Banknorth Garden. "Any time you lose a game and you think you played well and it's tied 1-1 in the third period, it's a painful ending," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin. Northeastern ended the season with a 16-18-3 overall record and a 12-13-2 Hockey East record. It was the team's most wins since getting 19 in 2001-02 and on Saturday the Huskies' won their first Hockey East playoff game since that same season. Vermont advances with a 16-14-7 record and a 13-9-5 Hockey East mark. It's the Catamounts' first trip to the Hockey East Semifinals. "It was a terrific year. We got 16 wins but we wanted to get 17," said Cronin. "We got a good win last night, we came into a tough building and got a win...We made positive steps this season. We've got good pieces coming back. We have a good goalie (Brad Thiessen) and I'm thrilled with our freshmen and sophomores and juniors." With the Huskies down, 1-0, Greg Costa made a great breakout pass to Tyler McNeely on the left wing. McNeely sped into the zone and passed it to Russo, who put it past Vermont goalie Joe Fallon at 3:47 in the third period. Vermont came right back when Corey Carlson scored on a high shot on a breakaway at 6:53 in the third period. Brian Roloff made a crisp pass up the middle of the slot to Carlson, who was behind the Huskies' defense. The Catamounts added a goal to their lead when Roloff scored. Wahsontiio Stacey backhanded a pass from the right side into the crease and Roloff put it in at 15:12. Vermont iced it when Dean strong put in an empty-net goal at 19:11. Vermont got out to a lead in the first period for the second night in a row. Brayden Irwin took a pass from Josh Burrows and shot it from the slot past Thiessen high on his stick side to make it 1-0 at 1:08 in the first. The Huskies had some good scoring chances in the first, including several shots on goal while Vermont's Wahsontiio Stacey was in the penalty box for hooking from 16:29-18:29. Northeastern was able to kill off a five-on-three penalty for 1:08 when Wade MacLeod took a hitting from behind minor and Joe Vitale took one for slashing. The second period went scoreless, with shots tied 10-10. Northeastern had several good scoring chances. Perhaps the best came when Vitale shot the puck from the right circle and the rebound went to an open Wade MacLeod on the left side. MacLeod shot it but Fallon pivoted to his right and made the save. The Huskies got a pair of power plays when Vermont's Slavomir Tomko was called for holding at 11:09 and Rees Wisnowski was whistled for contact to the head-roughing at 18:36. The Huskies didn't put a goal on the board in the second and held the Catamounts scoreless when Chris Donovan took a holding-the-stick penalty at 15:38. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
