| 2008-09 Schedule/Results Northeastern 5, Maine 0
Five different Huskies scored and Brad Thiessen made 29 saves for his school-record eighth career shutout as Northeastern defeated Maine 5-0 Friday night at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Mike Hewkin, Chris Donovan, Rob Rassey, Alex Tuckerman and David Strathman all scored as Northeastern, ranked No. 11 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and No. 14 in the USCHO.com/CBS College Sports poll, improved to 4-0-1 on the young season. Maine falls to 1-2-1. For Thiessen, his eighth career shutout surpasses Keni Gibson’s seven shutouts, which he set from 2001-05. This is Thiessen’s second shutout of the season; he made 35 saves in a 4-0 win over Providence on Oct. 17. The Huskies struck early as Hewkin received a pass from Wade McLeod and hit a wrist shot from the blue line that sailed past Maine goaltender Dave Wilson at 3:31 of the first period. For Hewkin, it was his first goal of the season, third of his career. Northeastern scored again less than four minutes later when Dylan Wiwchar fed Greg Costa, who took a shot from the top of the right circle that bounced off Wilson’s pad and Donovan backhanded the rebound past Wilson for the 2-0 advantage at 6:42. It was Donovan’s second goal of the season, second in as many games. The Huskies quickly tallied a third goal when Steve Quailer raced down the left side of the ice and set up Rassey with a pass that he flung past Wilson for a goal at 7:56. In his first game of the season, Rassey scores as Northeastern held a 3-0 lead before half of the first period was over. Northeastern added to the lead in the second period when Strathman bounced the puck off the glass and was picked up by Steve Qualier, who fed it to a streaking Tuckerman. Tuckerman, who was all alone, then whipped it past Wilson, netting his first collegiate goal. His goal at 11:02 gave NU a 4-0 lead. For Strathman, it was his fourth assists in as many games. The Huskies added a third period goal at 7:51. Setting up for a shot, Strathman took a pass from Joe Vitale and flicked it past Wilson from the right circle. The Huskies finished with 26 shots while Maine had 29. The two teams combined for 18 penalties, nine alone in the second period. Northeastern and Maine meet in a rematch Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game will air live on WRBB Radio.
