| 2008-09 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Maine 1
The Huskies trailed going into the third period but goals from Rob Rassey and Ryan Ginand lifted Northeastern to a 2-1 win over Maine at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine, on Saturday night. The Huskies swept the weekend after winning Friday's game, 5-0. Netminder Brad Thiessen was excellent again, making 24 saves in Saturday's victory. At 5-0-1, the Huskies are off to the second-best start in Northeastern history. The only longer unbeaten streak to start a season was in the 1980-81 season when NU went 12-0-0 to start the year. Northeastern is 4-0-0 in Hockey East, NU's best start in league play since joining Hockey East in 1984-85. Maine fell to 1-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in Hockey East. Down 1-0 in the third period, Rassey's goal tied it up at 9:02. Freshman Alex Tuckerman stopped a clear attempt on the right boards and fired a pass into the slot, which Rassey tipped past Maine goalie Scott Darling for the score. It was Rassey's second goal in as many nights. On the game-winning play, defenseman Louis Liotti fired the puck from the blueline behind the net. Kyle Kraemer was behind the net and broke the puck free for Ginand. Ginand came out from behind the net and backhanded a shot off Darling's shoulder and in to make it 2-1 at 16:23 in the third period. It was Ginand's third goal of the season in his 100th career game. Maine generated a lot of scoring chances in the first period and outshot the Huskies 11-4. With Louis Liotti in the penalty box for hooking, Joe Vitale took a slashing minor at 17:24, giving the Black Bears a 5-on-3 for 1:17. They capitalized at 18:11 when Spencer Abbott potted the rebound of a Josh Van Dyk shot from the left corner of the crease. Simon Danis-Pepin also had an assist on the play. The second period went scoreless with both teams getting solid scoring opportunities. The Huskies generated a lot of pressure on a power play when Jeff Dimmen was whistled for tripping at 10:47. Maine got a 4-on-3 power play for 1:50 when Vitale was sent to the box for the second time, this time for tripping at 14:50. The Huskies' penalty kill held strong and kept the Black Bears off the board. NU got another chance when Keif Orsini was called for tripping at 17:40 but NU couldn't get a shot on goal. Maine led shots in the second, 8-5. Thiessen had a shutout streak of 108:04 when Maine scored on him. He allowed just one goal over 120 minutes, making 55 saves over the two games. Maine outshot Northeastern 27-13 in the game. Northeastern plays a home-and-home series against New Hampshire next weekend. The Huskies travel to the Whittemore Center on Friday and host the Wildcats on Saturday. Friday's game will be televised on CN8. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio.
