| 2008-09 Schedule/Results Northeastern 5, Vermont 3
No. 7 Northeastern took a 5-3 win over No. 15 Vermont at Gutterson Fieldhouse behind a two-goal performance from Ryan Ginand and multi-point games from four others on Friday night. Alex Tuckerman had a goal and two assists, Tyler McNeely and Steve Silva each had a goal and an assist and Steve Quailer had a pair of assists. The Huskies improved to 7-1-2 overall and 5-1-1 in Hockey East with the win. After Friday's results, the Huskies lead the league by four points. After losing, Vermont is 4-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the league. Vermont scored the first goal of the game on a power play at 7:22 in the first period. Brian Roloff made a quick pass from beyond the goal line to Viktor Stalberg in front and Stalberg banked a hard shot past Thiessen for the score. The Huskies fired back when McNeely scored his second short-handed goal of the season at 16:43. With Louis Liotti in the penalty box for tripping, Tuckerman poked the puck away from a Vermont player at mid-ice and McNeely blasted ahead for a breakaway. He skated on the right side of the crease and roofed a shot above the glove of Vermont goalie Rob Madore to make it 1-1. The Huskies got out to a solid lead early in the second period. Quailer threaded a pass out from the left corner to Silva, who was rushing the net. Silva had his stick down and shot it past Madore to make it 2-1 Huskies at 2:13. Tuckerman started the play with a good backcheck in the Huskies zone. The Huskies took a two-goal lead on a Ginand power-play score at 5:15 in the second period. The Huskies cycled it around and Ginand got a hard shot off from the right circle that hit something in front and went over Madore and into the net. Wade MacLeod and McNeely got assists on the play. Vermont got within a goal when Roloff put in the rebound of a Stalberg shot at 8:56 in the second. Stalberg got the puck and rushed down the ice for a three-on-one and got the shot on Thiessen. Roloff was able to net the rebound to make it 3-2. Tuckerman would get the Huskies back to a two-goal lead in the second period when he wrapped around the net and got one past Madore at 12:18. Silva and Quailer got helpers on the play. Ginand got the Huskies' fifth goal of the game on a power play at 7:45 in the third period. David Strathman took a hard shot from the point and Joe Vitale followed it up. Ginand put the puck under Madore's pads. Vermont got within two on a Justin Milo goal at 9:44 in the third period and pulled Madore for the final 2:03 but couldn't put another on the board and the game ended 5-3. Madore ended the night with 23 saves to Thiessen's 21. Northeastern is back in action on Sunday when the Huskies take on Boston University at Agganis Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston.
