Northeastern took a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Boston University on Sunday night at Agganis Arena. The seventh-ranked Huskies never got much momentum in the game and the Terriers scored twice in the second period and added a third goal in the third. Huskies goalie Brad Thiessen made 24 saves.
With the loss, Northeastern is 7-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in Hockey East while Boston University improved to 7-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in Hockey East. The Huskies remain atop the Hockey East standings.
The first period went scoreless with Boston University outshooting Northeastern 12-5. The Terriers had two power plays, including a short five-on-three, but the Huskies defended their zone well and Thiessen was excellent, stopping all 12 shots. The Huskies had a great scoring chance on a penalty kill when Tyler McNeely stole the puck and went up the ice for a two-one-one and crossed a pass to Joe Vitale. Vitale shot it but BU goaltender Kieran Millan came across to make a great save and keep NU off the board.
The Terriers got a pair of goals in the second period and took a 2-0 margin into the final set. Nick Bonino scored the first goal for the Terriers when he picked up a pass from Matt Gilroy in front of the net and got it past Thiessen. Greg Costa had made a good play to break up the pass but Bonino was in the right place at the right time to pick up the loose puck and score at 4:25 in the second. Andrew Glass scored the second Terrier goal of the game, the first of his collegiate career, at 6:22 in the second period.
The Huskies got some scoring chances in the third period and outshot the Terriers, 7-6, but couldn't find the back of the net. BU was able to put another goal on the board at 14:16 on a great play by Colin Wilson and Chris Higgins. Wilson took the puck in through the left circle and made a great pass to Higgins, who went from forehand to backhand and roofed a shot over the stick side of Thiessen to make it 3-0.
It was the first time this season Northeastern has been shut out and the first shutout for BU freshman goaltender Kieran Millan, who made 18 saves. Both teams went scoreless on four power plays.
Northeastern is back in action next weekend with a pair of Hockey East games. Northeastern hosts New Hampshire on Friday night at 7 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio and will have live video on GoNU.TV. On Saturday, the Huskies will travel to UMass Lowell to play the River Hawks at Tsongas Arena. That game will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston.
