| 2008-09 Schedule/Results Northeastern 4, UMass Lowell 3
Junior Greg Costa had a hat trick to lift No. 5 Northeastern to a 4-3 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday night at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. Ryan Ginand had a goal and two assists and was on the ice for all four of the Huskies' goals. Goaltender Brad Thiessen made 36 saves, including 13 in the third period. Northeastern improved to 9-2-2 overall and 7-2-1 in Hockey East while UMass Lowell dropped to 6-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in Hockey East. Northeastern leads Hockey East by four points heading into Thanksgiving. The game was tied, 1-1, entering the third period and UMass Lowell's Paul Worthington scored just 20 seconds into it. Ben Holstrom and Patrick Cey got assists on the play. The Huskies came right back with Costa's second goal of the game 25 seconds later at 0:45 in the third period. Ginand and Chris Donovan worked behind the net to get the puck to Costa, who put it past UMass Lowell goaltender Nevin Hamilton. Ginand made it 3-2 when he scored from the slot at 7:39 in the third period. He took a pass from Tyler McNeely and shot a laser through traffic into the top left corner of the net. Wade MacLeod also got an assist on the play. Costa completed the hat trick at 9:17 in the third, giving the Huskies a 4-2 advantage. Steve Silva stole the puck in the neutral zone and passed it ahead to Costa, who flew down the right side. He was almost to the goal line when he backhanded the puck toward the net and it just caught the inside of the crossbar for the score. It was Northeastern's first hat trick since Ginand's in a 6-4 loss to New Hampshire on Nov. 4, 2005. The game waned into the final minutes and UMass Lowell pulled Hamilton with just over a minute to go. The River Hawks got an extra-attacker goal from David Vallorani at 19:35 when they crowded the front of the net, getting seveal shots on Thiessen before the puck finally went in. Maury Edwards and Holstrom got assists on the play. UMass Lowell kept Hamilton off the ice and made a last ditch effort to tie it but couldn't get another good scoring chance and the final was 4-3. UMass Lowell struck first when Michael Budd scored at 10:53 in the first period. Nick Schaus and Nick Monroe got the puck to the front of the net where Thiessen saved a couple shots. The puck came loose in the crease and Thiessen swiped at it with his stick but couldn't clear it. Budd buried it to make it 1-0 River Hawks. Northeastern was able to even it up at 14:18 in the first period. Costa won a faceoff to Ginand in the UMass Lowell zone and the Huskies went right to the net. Ginand passed it to Costa in front and Costa put the puck past Hamilton for the score and it was 1-1 going into the second period. The second period was action packed but neither team found the back of the net. The Huskies started the second on a power play after Ryan Blair took a high sticking penalty at 19:55 in the first. The River Hawks were able to kill that one off but Maury Edwards went to the penalty box for slashing at 2:10. Northeastern had several scoring chances on that power play, including a post-shot by David Strathman at 3:30. UMass Lowell got a pair of power plays in the later half of the second period but came up scoreless. NU led the shot count, 14-10, in the second period. Northeastern plays in the RPI Holiday Tournament next weekend in Troy, N.Y. The Huskies play No. 8 Princeton in the first round on Friday at 4 p.m. and play either RPI or Mercyhurst in the second round the next day. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston.
