| 2008-09 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, UMass Lowell 1
Mike McLaughlin scored the game-winning goal for the second night in a row and goaltender Brad Thiessen made 32 saves as Northeastern beat UMass Lowell 3-1 on Saturday at Tsongas Arena. Dennis McCauley scored the first goal of the game and Joe Vitale scored an empty-netter for the Huskies. Northeastern improved to 22-8-4 overall and 17-5-3 in Hockey East with the victory. The 22 wins is second-most in program history only to the 25-9-2 team of 1981-82. Northeastern swept UMass Lowell in the season series for the first time since 1994-95. UMass Lowell evened out to 15-15-2 and 12-11-2 in Hockey East. McCauley scored the first goal of the game for the Huskies late in the first period. David Strathman passed the puck from the right point to Jim Driscoll on the left and Driscoll fired a shot on net. McCauley tipped it halfway to the crease and it went over UMass Lowell goaltender Carter Hutton's shoulder to make it 1-0 at 18:47. UMass Lowell outshot Northeastern, 10-5, in the first period and Thiessen came up aces. He made a great stop on a rebound shot by Johnathan Maniff from the left side of the crease early in the first and another save on a Paul Worthington short-handed shot late in the period. NU sophomore Wade MacLeod had a good opportunity when he tried a wraparound with Hutton behind the net but he couldn't get the angle. McLaughlin made it 2-0 Huskies with his second game-winning goal in as many nights. Mike Hewkin started the play along the boards when he poked the puck to McLaughlin and McLaughlin took it into the zone. He dropped a pass to Randy Guzior on his right, then went to the net. Guzior shot the puck and McLaughlin redirected it into the net at 5:35. He has six goals since Jan. 17. The River Hawks got back within a goal when David Vallorani scored at 9:34. He was open down low on the right side and redirected a Nick Monroe shot for the score. Thiessen was peppered with 14 shots in the second and made 13 saves. UMass Lowell started the third period on a power play for 1:53 with Vitale in the penalty box for cross checking. The River Hawks got several shots on goal, including two up close by Holstrom, but Thiessen stopped every one. The River Hawks outshot the Huskies 9-4 in the third period and 33-17 in the game. UMass Lowell pulled Hutton with just over a minute to go and the Huskies stifled the River Hawks' efforts. Strathman got control of the puck in the neutral zone and sent it to Vitale, who took it into the zone and sealed the win with an empty-netter at 19:45. Northeastern finishes off the regular season with a home-and-home series against Boston College next weekend. The Huskies host the Eagles in the first game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised on NESN. UMass Lowell hosts Maine for a pair on Friday and Saturday at Tsongas Arena.
