Former Northeastern defenseman Jim Averill was inducted to the Beanpot Tournament Hall of Fame between the semifinal games on Monday at the TD Banknorth Garden. Averill played on Northeastern’s 1984 and 1985 Beanpot Tournament champion teams.
Averill, Class of 1986, led Northeastern’s defense. In 1984 he helped Northeastern hold opponents to five goals over two games as NU defeated Harvard by a score of 7-3 and then BU by a score of 5-2 for the title. In 1985 opponents were limited to four goals as the Huskies swept BC and BU by scores of 4-2 in both games.
Averill, his older brother Bob (NU ’85), younger brother Will (NU ’92) and father Bob “Bo” Averill (NU ’57) participated in a cumulative total of 14 Beanpots over the course of their respective careers. In his first appearance in 1982, Jim Averill and the Huskies lost to Boston College in overtime by a score of 3-2, but he scored the game-winning goal against Harvard in a 6-5 victory in the consolation game.
He captained the Huskies’ 1985 team and that season was voted All-New England, All-Hockey East and All-America. He was inducted into the NU Hall of Fame in 2002 and is Northeastern’s third all-time leading scorer among defensemen. He scored 19 goals and assisted on 99 for 118 points in 124 collegiate games.
Also inducted into the Beanpot Hall of Fame were goalie Dan Brady, Boston University Class of 1972 and the late Bill Flynn, Boston College Class of 1939. Flynn served as BC Athletics Director from 1957-91.
Averill is president of the Averill Engineering Group, a sales consultant firm and currently resides in the Boston area.
